Content warning: baby lossLast month, Grazia hosted a discussion between obstetricians, midwives and the Chief Midwifery Officer for England, along with activists and authors in Black maternal health, organised by the creators of new film 22+1, producer Pippa Vosper and director Pippa Bennett-Warner.The film takes an unflinching look at systemic racism in maternal healthcare in the UK, and the experience of Black mothers who are 43% more likely to miscarry than white women, less likely to receive pain relief in labour, and twice as likely to suffer postnatal depression.In anticipation of Baby Loss Awareness Week (which starts today), we asked the women in that room two important questions.What needs to change to improve black maternal health in the UK?What’s your message to women this baby loss awareness week?Though there’s no simple answer to either question, the considered and thoughtful answers these women gave are worth your time today. by @vanessahaye

This photo is from an event I hosted in 2019. Photos are powerful because they tell stories about stories.❤️‍🩹[TW] For one, I was still recovering from an ectopic I had 6 weeks prior 🫂In the same room there were other women leaning in, listening, and keen to hear from others for information that actually spoke to them and they could relate to. I’ve spent years in rooms like this: talking, writing, hearing the same stories. Women dismissed, delayed, left to figure out their own bodies and reproductive health alone. For Black women and women of colour, that gap is even wider. The research is clear and the lived experiences are even clearer.All this to say, this has led to my start-up Maame Health. We help you understand your body and navigate your reproductive health with clarity and confidence. I wrote a letter to The Guardian about the renewed women's health strategy. They published it.It was quite the opposite to what the consensus:📑I wrote about the gynaecology referral queue that would stretch over 191 miles. About women seeing a GP for severe period pain and being told it's normal. About a woman who spent two decades being dismissed and gaslit — before finally receiving a diagnosis she knew she had all along.That woman is me.And she is thousands of others.I welcome the government's relaunched women's health strategy — but with caution. Because ethnicity, culture and access continue to shape who is believed, how quickly, and with what outcome. And until misogynoir is named and addressed, we risk reproducing the same inequalities the strategy claims to solve.If Wes Streeting is serious about hitting medical misogyny where it hurts, misogynoir cannot be a footnote.Thanking God first opening this up, and always shouting out my teacher @profsue123 who says [paraphrasing] in her "Byline bible" book that being a contrarian isn't always a bad thing 😏 by @vanessahaye
