Over the last month, knowing I’m facing major surgery because of endometriosis, I’ve found myself researching this illness more and more.

I’ve always loved research and normally it’s archives of hair, fashion, culture and history for work. This time, I used that same curiosity for something much more personal.

It started when I read that Marilyn Monroe had endometriosis. I wondered: did they actually know she had it in the 1950s, or was she diagnosed retrospectively from her medical records? I started digging and guess what…

They knew. She was diagnosed and treated for chronic endometriosis during her lifetime. That led me to another question: how long have we known about this disease?

More than 160 years.

And that made me angry. As a radical feminist and ally to marginalised communities, I can’t separate my experience of illness from the patriarchal systems surrounding it. I know what it means to say I am in pain and have to fight to be believed. And every day, I meet people in my chair who are still searching for answers about endometriosis and other chronic illnesses.

This post is for you.

Keep asking questions. Ask again. Seek another opinion. Ask for investigations. Ask for a specialist.

You have the right to be listened to.
You have the right to be believed.
You have the right to appropriate medical care.

I’m pinning this here because maybe someone will find it, share it with a friend, or realise they’re allowed to keep asking for answers.

160 years. We deserve to know our history and we deserve to be heard. BEING LISTENED IS NOT A PRIVILEGE!

MEET OUR EDUCATORS!

Vanessa has spent over 18 years behind the chair, but her inspiration has never come from hair alone. Travel, different cultures, art, architecture, fashion, cinema, music and subcultures all feed into the way she sees and creates.

She loves transformation, individuality and the stories behind the way we choose to present ourselves. Her work moves between precision and imperfection, classic technique and something a little more unexpected.

Education came naturally from that curiosity. For Vanessa, teaching isn’t about creating copies of her work, it’s about sharing knowledge, opening conversations and encouraging every hairdresser to develop their own eye.

Despite many of you knowing me as a transformation specialist, at the core of what I do there is Education.

It wasn’t something I had planned, simply because I never thought I could ever qualify for it. About eight years ago, when I was asked to become the NVQ trainer for the company I was working with, I was honestly surprised. The feedback from my mentors at the time was really positive, and apparently… I was made for it! Who knew?

When I think back to when I used to attend courses, I always looked at my educators with so much admiration. They inspired me, and to this day they remain my idols. I used to think: “How amazing must it be to be that knowledgeable?”

After years of teaching, I’ve learned that education requires even more dedication than salon work itself. It demands constant study and research. Over these years, I’ve had to dive into gender history, society, and cultural shifts. I’ve spent days in cultural and fashion archives, researching to understand why each haircut or colour trend exists. Add to that trend forecasting, keeping up with red-carpet events, fashion weeks, cinema and music, anything that influences society today. I still buy magazines, and I constantly visit art and fashion exhibitions.

It’s been beautifully intense.

And of course, I keep booking myself on courses too because to mentor others, I also need to keep learning and growing.

And damn… I love it.

✨ Education wasn’t something I chose, education chose me. And today, I can’t picture my journey without it.

The next 10 days are going to be my last ones before I take the rest of the year off. I want to thank all the clients that have supported me and trusted me with their image and hair. I will miss our time spent together, your stories, your opinions and your beautiful personality. During this year there have been many moments where I felt lonely but never when I have been with you. Most Wanted, what an incredible night.
Surrounded by people who continue to inspire and shape our industry. Thank you to @oliverblackabyhair and @siobhanjoneshair and everyone I shared the evening with, including the lovely new people I met.

I’m proud to have come away as a finalist. To me, that recognition means the message behind my entry was heard.

I wanted to share my creativity and where it comes from: the communities, identities and people who are too often pushed to the margins by a society that still discriminates.

My entry carried a message of love and inclusion within our industry. Celebrating different ethnicities, the transgender community and people of all ages. Celebrating those we still call “minorities”, with the hope that one day everyone will feel equally represented, respected and included.

Probably my last big hair transformation of the year, and I absolutely loved every minute of it 🎨

My last working day is 22nd October, and I’m now fully booked. I’ll be taking the rest of the year off to recover from surgery, with a return to work in January.

My January calendar is still closed, but you’re welcome to email your booking enquiries. I’ll start replying from mid-December.

In the meantime, I highly recommend The Hair Salon team to look after you and your hair. You’re always welcome to get in touch with me, but while I’m recovering, please contact front of house for help finding the stylist best suited to you.

This colour transformation really made my day. Give me a complicated colour challenge and I come alive. It’s the work I love most, and moments like this remind me why I call myself a colour transformation specialist.

Jamie had been wearing pink for a long time. When direct dye has been layered again and again, the stain can hide in areas that look like natural hair, then reappear when you start to lift.

She brought me a reference with smoky tones and a seamless blend. We worked towards that, knowing her hair might take us somewhere slightly different. I’ve been doing Jamie’s hair for a while, and her trust and open mind gave me room to respond to what happened along the way.

Focus, thought, attention, care. I hold my breath and the magic is done. And gosh I could keep doing this forever ⭐
