I am beyond excited to share the cover of my debut novel, Ellipses, which will be published in March 2024. Ellipses follows a young woman caught in a toxic mentorship with an older executive against the backdrop of an increasingly digitized New York media world. This design perfectly captures the liminal tension and digital half-lives and youthful longing and quest for wholeness at the heart of this story. Plus, it features some of my favorite colors 🔮🔮🔮

Vanessa Lawrence is a writer, editor, and native New Yorker. Her debut novel, Ellipses, was named a best book of 2024 by Vogue and a most anticipated book of the year by ELLE, Electric Literature, and Autostraddle. For nearly two decades she covered the arts, fashion, beauty, design, and New York society as a staff writer for publications including Women’s Wear Daily and W Magazine. She has a BA in history from Yale University and an MFA in creative writing from Sarah Lawrence College. Her second novel, Sheer, will be published by Dutton on January 13, 2026 and is an Indie Next Pick.

Introducing Max’s Mood Board: a fictional mood board that Maxine Thomas, the protagonist of Sheer, might have dreamed up if she had explored museums and nature (and peeked at my phone’s photo album) in search of inspiration for her cult beauty company Reveal.

Between now and January 13th, Sheer’s pub date, I will be sharing some fictional mood boards, each embodying a different facet of Max’s beauty aesthetic.

Here is Max’s Mood Board: Transparency and an excerpt from Sheer:

“[My products] wouldn’t cover up a woman’s radiance. They would enhance it. I would create makeup that revealed who a woman really was—in her best light.”
