🎥 Puerto Rican photographer and storyteller Vania J. Arroyo @vaniajarroyo brings intimacy, memory, and ancestral reverence to Chromatic Roots: A Visual Journey Through Caribbean Identity, Culture, and Color. Arroyo documents everyday life in Loíza, Puerto Rico—domino games, kitchen rituals, laughter, and portraits of elders—transforming personal and familial moments into a living archive of Afro-Caribbean identity. For Vania, the act of photographing is both artistic practice and cultural responsibility. Part of an artist’s legacy, she argues, is to preserve these moments, ensuring that narratives of joy, resilience, and belonging are maintained across generations. Through her lens, art functions as archive, storytelling as testimony: each image becomes a testament to lineage, heritage, and the enduring traditions that shape Caribbean life. Her work is rooted in both personal memory and collective history, reflecting the richness of Afro-Puerto Rican culture and the strength of familial and communal bonds. This series is both intimate and generative—a love letter to Loíza, to family, and to the cultural practices that continue to define identity. 📍Exhibited at Boston City Hall during Caribbean Heritage Month in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs @culturalaffairsequity and the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture @artsinboston #Nucarta #ChromaticRoots #VaniaJArroyo #PuertoRicanArt #AfroPuertoRican #DiasporaArtists #ArtAsArchive #CaribbeanArt #BostonArts #CaribbeanHeritageMonth by @vaniajarroyo

Feeling incredibly grateful. 🖤🤎 BlackBrownBoston is deeply honored to receive the Community Champion Award from the @tagassociation . THANK YOU for seeing our work, believing in our mission, and creating space to uplift community-centered organizations like ours. To our community — this award belongs to YOU. Every event you show up to, every conversation you engage in, every story you trust us with… you are the reason this work continues to matter. Thank you for the constant love, encouragement, and accountability. To our sponsors and community partners: THANK YOU for walking alongside us. From supporting culturally rooted programming to helping us create spaces for connection, healing, joy, and celebration — we could not do this without you. This year, we’ve been proud to create intentional gatherings, expand The Barbershop Clinic, amplify Black and Brown culture across Boston, and continue building spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued. None of it happens alone. We receive this award with humility and gratitude, and we look forward to continuing to grow, build, and be in community together in 2026 and beyond. The family matriarch turned 81 years young 🎉 Y’all know that my family is my favorite “thing” to document 📸 Our elders have taught our generation how to truly be intentional and present ♥️ My grandmother was surrounded by her daughters, a niece and a sister for her birthday and they had a BLAST with their Mary Kay skincare class. They were happy that it was just them lol. They didn’t have to worry about tending to their kids (even though my cousins and I are all 35+) or grandkids. It was a special moment just for them to socialize and celebrate amongst eachother (one of the great grandkids did manage to sneak in to the class 😂). @thabombshell617 GIRL … STAAAAHP 🥹 I shot my first book cover for @thabombshell617 second book titled, “National Security—Protecting God’s Investment”. We discussed her vision, planned the entire session and then she came to the studio and we had a truly awesome session 📸 Tonight I photographed her book launch and was surprised to learn that I was included in the acknowledgment 🫶🏽 What an incredible honor! As a photographer, sometimes I forget that this isn’t just what I do for a living, but a true gift from God. Thank you, Tiffany, for supporting my business and allowing me to be part of your project. I’m blessed! Please visit www.life617.com to learn how you could support her journey and get your copy 📖 by @vaniajarroyo
I’m honored to share that I’ll be receiving the Community Champion Award from TAG at the 36th Annual Jolgorio on December 13th 🥹 For those who may not know, The Jolgorio is TAG’s annual celebration and fundraiser. TAG—The Talented and Gifted Association, Inc. (TAGa)—is “a MA 501(c)3 nonprofit, championing the Greater Boston Latino/e community through education, art, and culture. TAGa’s mission centers on uplifting Latinos via culturally sustaining educational and development initiatives, striving for a future where the success of the Latino community makes these efforts obsolete.” This honor means A LOT to me because TAG was actually part of my journey. Back in the summer of 2018, I worked for TAG as their Behavioral Specialist—my first time in that kind of role. Though it was a short experience, it was one that changed the trajectory of my life and ultimately inspired me to pursue the field I’m in today, supporting children with Autism as a behavioral specialist. To now be recognized by TAG, years later, for my work through BlackBrownBoston is a full-circle moment ✨ The work we do at Blackbrownboston is intentional—from the programming we create to the events we curate, to ensuring we hire Black and Latino vendors to provide opportunities and visibility in our communities. Thank you, TAG, for this honor ♥️ Tickets for The Jolgorio are on sale now for $100, and I would love to see some familiar faces in the crowd as I receive this award. Come celebrate with me—then stay after so we can dance a little salsa together 💃🏽🕺🏽 Get your tickets or donate at this link: https://givebutter.com/c/Jolgorio2025 #Boston #BlackBrownBoston #TAGAssociation #AfroBoricua #VaniaJArroyo by @vaniajarroyo
