Annie Dillard says the line of words is a hammer, testing the walls of your house.

and when you’re building a novel, or in this case an album—you tap along the walls, searching for what is true/sure—what’s stable—what stays—what must go. Often, it’s the load bearing walls that must go.

Orange Blossom Child is a tearing down of the load bearing walls of my family’s story.

It’s my hope that in bringing you in,

you’ll cut a rug with us

drive down winding highways with us

hold one another close in dark days with us

share a good joke, the kind that induces hootin’ hawin’ belly laughter with us

that you’ll learn how to love without fear—with us

that you’ll see that every ordinary story holds moments of the divine

that you can be anyone from anywhere, and your stories matter.

You are art walking.

Heartrending. Stunning. Unique.

This work wouldn’t exist without the community that’s been birthed through this process of the making of the work. In opening myself and my days spent creating, you all threw in and have become family. The artists who chose to give their yes, and elevate the work with their own creativity. The musicians who leaned into these stories. This is so much bigger than me.

This is for you.

I hope you listen start to finish.

I hope these songs become trusted friends.

I work a lot by myself and that’s fine by me. I don’t mind it, and there are certainly perks to being able to create on your own and use remote contributors, BUT...

There is NO substitute for making music in real time with real human beings all in the same room at once. I get to do that again for the first time in quite a few months next week in BNA, and to say I’m excited would be the understatement of the millennium.

If I go back, WAY back, to my very first time in a recording studio to track a session, I was only seven years old. The headphones kept slipping off my tiny head, and I was fascinated by all the faders and mics, and the engineer with his sunglasses on inside and his gold chain (it was New Jersey in the ‘80s). I never thought I’d be the one behind the desk, but life has a way of showing you that you can do more than you think.

I LOVE making music. The life-giving nature of making art never wears off for me because it quite literally lights me up from the inside. Art is a lot like love: the more you create, just like the more you truly, really, deeply love, the more it expands and gets bigger.

So whatever you’re doing, keep going.

behind the scenes: the process of preproduction for a grassy album 🌾

goes something like this.

write the song = vocals lyrics guitar

if you’re lucky enough to have a collaborator, send it across the ocean to them. (Or keep it domestic if they’re local.)

you’ll talk about it. Sometimes you change things, sometimes you don’t. This time we didn’t.

He puts his own vibely parts on for a guide. 🎸

you get it back and put it in the pile.

This one’s gonna have a lot of dobro, so I don’t track a main “riff” or anything for fiddle. Leaving spaces.

BEFORE the session, you pull out the ones that you haven’t touched on fiddle and you learn them 📝

Bc knowing them on vocal or guitar or any other instrument isn’t the same.

so you work on some voicings for a nice texture riff or part that could be panned off to the side to add some scrapey magic supporting what the band and the dobro will do.

THREE YEARS OF OBC!!!

Today marks three years since my most honest most singular most personal album I’ve ever made was born into the world. It was a massive effort. It was bigger than me, and still is. So thankful for all the doors opened by this brave little collection of songs, so greatly for every note played by every human hand and heart.
