The Mount Washington Auto Road is the oldest man-made tourist attraction in the U.S.A.

This 7.6 mile road was first traversed by stagecoach in 1861, and was known as Mnt Washington Carriage Road

Birtha purred the whole way up, we stopped 3 times on the way down to cool her brakes - an easy mission for the two of us but I can't imagine how some of the first motor vehicles managed to get up this mountain!

Back then the sticker "This car climbed Mnt Washington" actually meant something!

But I am overwhelemd with happiness that her and I made the journey pre-conversion, because the auto Road will not allow a converted van to go up the mountain!

Overall our first voyage to new territory togeather was a complete success - I can't wait for a thousand more new places with you Birtha

⚠️ And yes—the hut “Croo” carry fresh food up the mountain on their backs, hauling up to 50 lb loads on traditional packboards!

AMC's Greenleaf Hut had the BEST Turkey dinner! 🤤

🍽 During full-service season, the huts have bunk beds (bring your own sleeping bag), composting toilets, cold running water, snacks & hot drinks, plus breakfast and dinner for overnight guests.

Outside of full-service season, some huts switch to self-service: amenities are more limited, and you bring and cook your own food.

👇 Leave a comment for more details about this hut!

Why just hike it when you can backpack it and sleep out in the middle of the woods?

9 peaks and 9500ft of elevation change over ~25miles of NY's highest peaks with only one potential water source on the ridge line - this was shaping up to be the hardest day hike I'd ever done!

Little voice in my head - "can you even do this?"
Big voice in my head - "shhhh" 😉

"We don't not got this" @lysslos
