The 4th Annual Phoenicia Festival of the Arts returns August 21–23, 2026, transforming the Catskills hamlet of Phoenicia into a vibrant celebration where contemporary art meets community life. Dada just said to me “you know, it occurred to me that if you were a musician you’d be Frank Zappa” because, he pointed out, Zappa used everything around him. Frank Zappa is dada’s faaaavorite. So Honeypie, the grit in my oyster, the man who says I go to my studio to Color, the one who predicts my next art sale by disparaging the work, has placed me next to Zappa on the book shelf. #winning by @vargagallery

Yesterday I extracted a hummingbird stuck by the beak in a screen! Looked like it had flown full speed into the screen and impaled its beak so deep that it couldn’t extract itself -so I did! So thankful I have decades of strange bird stories and was able to help this little bird! Thank you to @courtneydudleyart for the amazing chance encounter!! by @vargagallery

Step into the wonderfully wild world of Catskills artist Christina Varga, where old things find new purpose, glitter catches the light and creativity grows from whatever life places in her path.👩‍🎨 Working with found objects, vintage scraps, discarded materials + everyday treasures, Christina transforms the overlooked into colorful, soulful works that celebrate women, nature and the magic hiding in the ordinary. A painter, assemblage artist, curator + founder of the Phoenicia Festival of the Arts @phoeniciafestivalofthearts — Christina’s studio is more than a workspace—it’s a gathering place for ideas, connection + creative possibility. Let's take a peek 🫣 below... 💬 I+O: Your work transforms discarded materials — from album covers to paper towels — into art. How do you find the “life” in these overlooked objects? 💬 Christina Varga: “It’s a real problem. I can’t help but see art supplies everywhere, and I tend to collect things like a magpie or something. If it glitters, is opalescent or is holographic at all, I go nuts. Surfaces, frames, and all kinds of things just wink at me constantly.
