As parents, we spend years watching, waiting, and wondering what will light that spark in our children. We hope they’ll find the thing that makes them come alive, but we can’t choose it for them. We can only pay attention when it finally appears.

For my oldest son, that spark came from a place I never expected: the EDM community. For his high school graduation, he asked for tickets to EDC. When he came home, something about him was different. It wasn’t just that he’d had fun. His energy had shifted. He talked differently. He carried himself differently. It was as if he’d found a place where he truly belonged. As his mom, I knew I needed to pay attention to that.

I made him a promise. I told him, “When you turn 21, I’m taking you and a group of your friends to EDC, and I want you to show me your world. I don’t want to stand on the outside and judge something I don’t understand. I want to experience it through your eyes.”

That decision became one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever given myself. What I found wasn’t just incredible music. I found a community built on acceptance, kindness, connection, and joy. More importantly, I found a deeper relationship with my son because I was willing to step into his world instead of asking him to stay in mine. Sometimes the best way to love our children isn’t to lead the adventure. It’s to let them be our guide. ❤️🎶 by @vbrvms
