Painting and Printmaking MFA Candidate, Trang Huynh, gave us a tour of her latest solo exhibition currently on view at the Anderson, “At The End Of The Song”!

As a memorial for her late grandfather, Trang’s exhibition explores the often intertwined and complicated relationship between love and grief. Through layered works combining paint, print, collage, and photo transfer, Trang investigates the past, present, and different stages of life alongside the concept of memory.

Thank you, Trang, for inviting us to your show!

“At The End Of The Song” will be on display at The Anderson until October 17th!

Join us today, Friday, October 9th, for an artist talk at The Anderson. Graduate student exhibitors Trang Huynh, Phaedra Beauchamp, and Elizabeth Schweizer will speak about their work in the gallery.

These second-year graduate students exhibited at the gallery last spring for their MFA Candidacy Exhibition which included the whole first-year MFA cohort. These three proposed exhibitions through The Anderson's Open Call for Student Exhibition Proposals for this fall, and the shows are on view now.

These exhibitions are one way graduate students develop their work as they look to their MFA Thesis Exhibition at the ICA at the culmination of their time in the program. Join us for this talk to learn more about the work and the development of their practices through this iterative exhibition process.

This event is free and open to the public.

The Department of Fine Arts is excited to welcome artist Khaled Jarrar for an upcoming visiting artist lecture!

🗓️ October 21st
⏰ 12:30 PM
📍 VCU Student Commons Theater (907 Floyd Ave.)

Khaled Jarrar was born and raised in Jenin-Ramallah, occupied Palestine, and currently lives in NYC. Khaled Jarrar is an artist whose career transitioned from the military discipline to a subversive art practice. His work is deeply rooted in his personal history and the lived reality of the West Bank. Jarrar uses diverse mediums including photography, sculpture, and performance art to highlight the complexities of life under occupation and the weight of sovereign identity. One of his projects includes upcycled concrete sculptures made by physically chiseling fragments from the apartheid wall and morphing them into pop art objects, to purchasing a land with 56 olive trees, all of which reclaim cultural endurance as a means of liberation, liberating the land (Ardh) from toxic synthetic fertilizers using black goat manure.

Every artist has a story behind the work.

For my latest MASC 483 Documentary assignment, I had the opportunity to tell Grace Sharpe's story, a senior in the Painting + Printmaking department at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts

Through this short documentary, I explored the story behind Grace’s senior thesis, her growth in confidence as a Black artist, and the ways her family, culture, and personal experiences have shaped her journey and the work she creates.

What stood out to me most was seeing how an artist’s work can become a reflection of where they come from, the people who surround them, and the culture that helps shape who they are.

As a filmmaker, projects like this remind me why I enjoy documentary storytelling. It’s not just about capturing what someone creates, but understanding why they create it.

The Department of Fine Arts is pleased to announce an upcoming visiting artist lecture with artist Nancy Lupo!

🗓️ October 12th, 2026
⏰ 12:30 PM
📍 Grace Street Theater (934 W. Grace St.)

Nancy Lupo is an artist currently based in Berlin. Her sculptures engage with material culture and language, exploring how collective fantasies and emotions become embedded in form. She tests ambiguity and confusion as conditions that are both unsettling and full of potential. Lupo holds degrees from The Cooper Union and Yale University. Since 2024, she has been a professor at Kunsthochschule Mainz.

WHAT DOES ART MEAN TO YOU?

Department of Fine Arts Chair Sheryl Oring wants to know.

Come find her in the DePillars lobby, tell her what art means to you, and she’ll type your answer on an old-school typewriter — a sentence, a story, a rant, a manifesto, a few words, whatever you’ve got.

No right answers. No wrong answers. We want to hear yours.

⌨️ Wednesday, September 30: 3–5 PM + 6:30–8 PM
⌨️ Friday, October 2: 3–5 PM
📍 Murry N. DePillars Building lobby

And on Friday, stick around for the Department of Fine Arts BBQ from 5–7 PM!

Speak out!
