Flowering plants spread across the planet faster than any other lineage in history by forming cooperative relationships that reshaped ecosystems. The internet can follow a similar path: it’s our strongest tool for the open exchange of knowledge across a global society, giving us the ability to build better futures together. The overload can feel daunting, but it wasn’t always this way- and it doesn’t have to stay this way. Just as ecosystems adapt and change, so can the internet, and so can the ways we use it. by @vcuntos

Growing up in the Y2K era, artist Vanessa Cunto thought the promise of technology was inseparable from the promise of a better future. At the time it felt like the changes would come soon and be accessible to all. Now, she says, "the future looks nothing like what was imagined."

But with her new exhibition, "Paths Like Past," Cunto finds hope.

Cunto is one of six artists Creative Pinellas selected to receive a 2026 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) America250 grant to create new projects that reflect on the history, present, and future of the country. "Paths Like Past" speaks to the intersection of nature and human impact in shaping the future identity of the United States.

"These are systems we created, which means we have the ability to change them," says Cunto, a first-generation American with roots in Italy and Venezuela. "This work is an invitation to reimagine what technological progress could look like if we oriented it toward the natural world and the systems that are infallible, having sustained life for millennia, and that can support society far more sustainably when looking at the next 250 years."

Join us Aug. 1, from 5-7 pm, for the opening of "Paths Like Past," a group of large-format drawings in her signature style of graphite powder on specialized paper, at ARTicles Gallery & Fine Art Services in St. Petersburg. The hyper-realism works will be on view through Aug. 4. taken in St. Petersburg, FL by @vcuntos
