Day 1 at @nigeriaminingweek made one thing crystal clear: Africa holds the critical minerals that power the entire global clean energy transition.

But until we transition from raw extraction to local refining and manufacturing, we will keep exporting our potential and importing expensive finished tech.

Building local refining capacity is how we build local factories, lower the cost of green tech, and create thousands of high-value jobs for our youth. 🛠️💼

I walked into Nigeria Mining Week Pre-Conference Day 1 expecting standard corporate talk, but what unfolded was a masterclass in industry reality ✨

Before the main event even began, leaders gathered around tables asking the uncomfortable questions: Is our data bankable? Do we have the power to refine minerals locally? Can investor rules be trusted?

But the defining moment for me? The Women in Extractive Industries Forum.

Listening to female engineers, ESG directors, and industry pioneers breakdown how women are claiming space in technical site roles and shaping community-led sustainability gave me absolute chills.

As an HR leader passionate about career pathways in clean energy and heavy industry, this hit home. Inclusion isn’t just nice to have, it’s the fuel powering Africa’s industrial transition.

Running a 2026 organization on 50-year-old rules makes practicing HR feel like extreme sports. 🥵

Still in the spirit of celebrating International HR Day, let me wish everyone in my network a happy HR Day! 🎉

But to my fellow Nigerian HR professionals... how are you guys really doing? What is it actually like practicing HR in Nigeria while operating under a 50-year-old Labour Act?

Over the past week, my timeline has been absolutely flooded with campaign flyers for leadership positions in one of our premier professional institutes. The energy is great, and the ambition to serve is highly commendable.

However, this is a humble and honest appeal to the institute and whoever emerges in the newly elected leadership: Please, make national policy advocacy a core focus.

We need our professional bodies to step up as a movement—pressuring lawmakers, ministers, and the National Assembly to completely overhaul these outdated laws.

Navigating the fast-paced realities of a foreign multinational in 2026 using rules from 1974 is wild. It is time to have the Labour Act completely revamped to address the modern realities of the current market.
