hey nana,
its your most favorite granddaughter in the world, vegas. i know youre gone, but i have something to say to you, even if you wont hear it.

i miss you so much. ive never experienced this sort of loss before, other than frankie. it was inevitable that this would happen, but i wish it wasn’t so soon.

i know youre playing with lizzy and frankie, laughing and catching up with your mom and sister now, watching me with love and pride. i know youre not in pain anymore.

you had your rough days and your good days. the days where i could only see a sliver of you, and the days where you were the same nana id always knew and loved. even the days where you couldn’t remember me, you’d talk to me about how your granddaughter is an emt, how shes in paramedic school, and that shes going to be a trauma surgeon one day. that shes a beautiful girl who always has unique dyed hair. how shes the smartest girl you knew. all while you didn’t realize the girl you were talking about was right in front of you. it was one of the hardest things i had to do. but i could feel your love and pride with every word you spoke. and that was, in some way, enough.

i wish i got to go to the outer banks with you. see bodie island and cape hatteras, your favorite lighthouses. walk barefoot on the beach with you while i keep my eyes glued to the sand, hunting for seashells. i wish i got to visit you more. i wish there were more good days than bad. i wish there weren’t so many hospital visits. i wish i got to eat your blueberry waffles one last time. i wish you got to make it to my 19th birthday. i wish you got to see me walk down the aisle. i wish you got to become a great grandmother. i wish i went with mom and dad to see you that day. to get one last good bye. one last “i love you.”

i will always miss you. i will always mourn you. i will always grieve you. but i will always carry you with me. i will always aim to make a change in the world and my community like you did. i will always think of you any time i reach a milestone in life. i will always love you.
