Happy 100th birthday to Sir David Attenborough, born on this day in 1926. For a century, this man has been the voice of the natural world.

From Life on Earth to Planet Earth to Our Planet, Attenborough has spent decades bringing the most remote and breathtaking corners of the world into living rooms across the globe. His voice alone has become synonymous with wonder.

What makes his story even more remarkable is that even at 100 years old, he is still working.

Fun facts:
- Attenborough has been awarded honorary degrees from more than 30 universities.
- Holds the record for the most wins by an individual at the BAFTA Television Craft Awards.
- He was the first person to present programs in all three of BBC’s broadcast formats, black and white, color, and HD.
- Never learned to drive, holds no driver’s license, and has never owned a car.
- Was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1985 for his services to broadcasting. This prestigious award (Knight Bachelor) entitles him to use the title “Sir” before his first name. taken in London, England by @veiledplanet

50 Years Ago, Women Still Needed a Man to Access Their OWN Money

On October 28, 1974, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act finally made it illegal for U.S. banks to require male approval for women to open bank accounts, get credit cards, or apply for loans. This landmark moment highlights a deeper truth: women have been systematically mistreated throughout history, and many forms of inequality still persist today, from pay gaps to financial discrimination.

Shocking Fact:
Before 1974, many banks legally treated a married woman’s income as her husband’s property, making even high-earning women ineligible for loans on their own.

The one person who voted no was Clay Higgins (R-Louisiana) (slide 2)

The U.S. House overwhelmingly passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act in a 427–1 vote, requiring the Department of Justice to release all unclassified records related to Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. The measure reflects broad bipartisan support for greater transparency. The bill now moves to the Senate for further consideration.

Survivor Presence: Epstein survivors stood outside the Capitol holding photos of themselves as children to emphasize the age at which they were abused and to humanize the legislative push.

KEY FACTS:
• Vote outcome: 427–1
• Requires release of unclassified DOJ records tied to Epstein
• Includes documents, communications, and investigative materials
• Strong bipartisan backing driven by long-standing public interest
• Senate timing and potential amendments remain pending

Saturn’s 2003 Ad - A Clear Look at Car-Centric Cities

Saturn’s 2003 commercial replaced cars with people to reveal how much space vehicles occupy and how deeply cities are built around cars rather than people. Today, its message is even more urgent: car-heavy design harms our environment, health, and overall quality of life.

Important Facts:
About the Commercial:
• Created by Jamie Barrett; filmed in Los Angeles over three days.
• Used people standing in place of cars to show the massive land cars consume.
• Became an early visual critique of car-centric urban planning.

Environmental & Health Impacts of Cars:
• Transportation is the largest U.S. CO₂ contributor (EPA).
• Asphalt and parking lots increase city heat by up to 7°F.
• Traffic noise elevates stress and cardiovascular risk (WHO).
• Car dependency reduces physical activity and increases obesity.
• Parking takes up 30–40% of land in many U.S. downtowns.
• Nearly 40,000 Americans die in traffic crashes each year (USDOT).

What the U.S. Government’s Intel Stake Means

After CHIPS Act funding began in August 2022, the U.S. government converted about $11.1B of Intel’s support into equity in 2025, giving it a ~10% non-voting stake and making it Intel’s largest single shareholder. This shift from subsidies to ownership highlights how essential semiconductors are to national security and AI, but it also raises concerns about potential market distortion, political influence over a private company, taxpayer financial risk, and the precedent of deeper federal involvement in strategic tech industries.

Important Information:
• The government’s ~10% Intel stake is significant but not a majority.
• Public disclosure signals that advanced chips are now treated as critical infrastructure.
• Federal ownership aligns national security interests with domestic chip production.
• The move could influence how future U.S. industrial and tech policy is structured.

A U.S. World War II cemetery in the Netherlands removed two exhibit panels that highlighted the service and sacrifices of Black American soldiers. Families, historians, and Dutch officials have raised concerns, arguing that the removal erases an essential part of wartime history and the dual fight Black troops faced—against fascism abroad and discrimination at home.

Important Facts:
• The panels were added in September 2024 after earlier criticism that Black soldiers’ stories were missing.
• One display featured Sgt. George H. Pruitt, a Black soldier who died attempting to save a comrade.
• Critics say the removal diminishes recognition of Black Americans’ contributions to liberating Europe.
• Local Dutch leaders and families of service members are urging U.S. officials to restore the displays.

Zohran Mamdani Defeats Andrew Cuomo in Historic NYC Mayoral Victory

Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Ugandan-born, Queens-raised democratic socialist, has been elected New York City’s first Muslim mayor, a major shift toward progressive, working-class politics. His campaign centered on free public bus service, rent freezes, affordable housing, and higher taxes on the wealthy to fund citywide equity programs.

In contrast, Andrew Cuomo’s campaign was overshadowed by past scandals, including the cover-up of COVID-19 nursing home deaths, sexual harassment findings by the NY Attorney General, and the shutdown of an anti-corruption commission he created. Cuomo also drew backlash for laughing at an Islamophobic remark about Mamdani during the race.

Mamdani’s victory symbolizes a generational change in leadership, one focused on transparency, fairness, and everyday New Yorkers rather than political power.

Key Facts:
- Mamdani: Supports rent freezes, free buses, and higher minimum wages.
- Mamdani: Former NY State Assembly member for Astoria, known for grassroots organizing.
- Cuomo: Underreported COVID-19 nursing home deaths by up to 50%.
- Cuomo: Found to have sexually harassed 11 women.
- Cuomo: Disbanded his own anti-corruption commission.
- Cuomo: Criticized for laughing at an Islamophobic campaign comment.

Israeli airstrikes on Gaza killed at least 104 Palestinians, including 46 children, after renewed clashes between militants and Israeli troops. The attack shattered a fragile ceasefire already strained by repeated violations and rising civilian casualties.

– The U.S. gives Israel about $3.8 billion in military aid annually.
– Gaza’s population exceeds 2 million, with half under 18.
– Over 80 ceasefire violations have been reported since the truce began.
– The conflict has displaced more than 1.7 million Palestinians since 2023.
