Hi we're Vela, well the family behind it😊👋

We thought it was time we told you a little bit about us, and how Vela came to be.

Vela started with a promise.

A promise to stop saying “one day” and take the first step towards building something of our own.

We’re a mom and dad to two little girls, and after a few years living overseas, we came home to Durban, the place that has always felt like home.

Then a little space in Durban North became available, and we thought, why not a coffee shop?

So we took a chance. And Vela was born.

For us, Vela is about more than coffee. It’s about family, taking a chance on a dream, and building something our girls can one day look at and say:
“Our mom and dad built that.”

The name Vela means to appear, to emerge, to come from, to originate in isiZulu.

It felt perfect for something that started as an idea and became something real.

DAY ONE, WHAT A DAY❤️

We honestly don’t even know where to begin.

Seeing so many people walk through our doors on opening day was one of the most humbling experiences. Standing there, watching something that started as an idea become a reality, was genuinely surreal. We kept looking around thinking, we actually did this. We took a chance, backed ourselves, and somehow, here we are.

We met so many incredible people, received so much love and support, and left the day feeling even more certain that we’d made the right decision. If day one is anything to go by, we’re so excited for what’s ahead. ☕️

But this is just the beginning. We know the hard work is still to come, and we’re ready for it. More than anything, we can’t wait to keep building Vela Kofi into a little community of its own!

There are so many people who helped us get here, and we couldn’t let this moment pass without saying thank you.

To the Now coffee team, Grant, Jarryd, Van, Shaun, Justine, Media Space, Guy, Lauren and Jess thank you for the part you played in bringing this dream to life.

To Granny, Oupa, Nana and Bap - thank you for loving and looking after our girls while Mom and Dad have been running around trying to make all of this happen. Thank you for your endless love, support and encouragement, and for keeping us going when things felt a little overwhelming❤️

To all our family and friends who have helped, encouraged us, checked in on us and backed us from the beginning we are so lucky to have you in our corner.

And finally, to SK and Ambrosia, the absolute stars of the day ⭐️ The real magicians behind the counter! Thank you for bringing your talent, energy and passion to Vela Kofi. We genuinely couldn’t do this without you.

And to every single person who came through, bought a coffee, shared a kind word, brought a friend or simply showed up to support us - THANK YOU. You made our first day something we will never forget.

We started this journey with a dream, a lot of unknowns and probably far more confidence than experience. 😂 And now, somehow, we’re here.

Just tried out the new coffee shop @velakofi_za - that’s opened next door to Mulligans in Mackeurtan Ave Durban North. Delicious coffee at affordable prices!
Plus they open at 6am!!! Perfect for that early morning school run coffee fix 😉

Turns out, there was A LOT we didn’t know, and we’re learning as we go.
