Happy 22nd birthday to my favorite person, my best girl, my Birdie Girl.
You are earth, wind, fire and rain. You’re lava and ice. You’re the very best of your Daddy and me… and, admittedly, some of the worst.
You’re our historian, our event planner, our decorator and our comedian. You keep us on track, while somehow always getting us off the beaten path. You don’t suffer fools, you love fiercely, and you bring more personality, laughter and life into our family than you probably realize.
Watching you become the woman you are has been one of the greatest joys of our lives. We couldn’t be more proud of you, and there isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t feel incredibly lucky that we get to call you ours.

The news that Columbia House is finally going out of business sent me straight down a little musical memory lane.
I grew up in a music-loving family in the 70s and 80s, which meant our house was basically a museum of evolving technology. We had a huge wooden stereo in the living room that played 33s. We had a Seeburg jukebox filled with 45s. And our car played 8-tracks. And because my ocd tendencies appeared early, I loved organizing and reorganizing those 8-tracks alphabetically by album name, artist and color. Then for Christmas 1986, 12-year-old Valerie got the latest technology: a boom box with a CD player. And exactly one CD. James Taylor’s Greatest Hits. Because what middle schooler wouldn’t want to spend her afternoons listening to the soothing folk-rock sounds of JT on repeat? I did my homework. I put on my blue mascara. And I listened to James Taylor croon “Fire and Rain” and “Something in the Way She Moves.” Meanwhile, I was biding my time until my birthday in April.

I had plans. Big plans.

I was going to take my birthday cash to the mall and start building my CD collection.

When April finally rolled around, I had $50 burning a hole in my pocket. I picked up Madonna. Aerosmith. Whitney Houston. Bon Jovi. Beastie Boys. CDs were $20 each, though, so choices had to be made. I walked out with something old and something new: Mr. Mister and Jimmy Buffett.

Together with JT, that was my music library. At least for the time being.

I was never brave enough to try to scam Columbia House out of 12 albums for a penny.

Looking back, I probably should have been more adventurous.

But seeing the news that Columbia House is finally shutting down made me think about how much music changed while I was growing up.

Vinyl to 8-tracks. 45s to cassettes to CDs. And now we carry practically every song ever recorded in our pockets. by @vemangrum

Happy Birthday to one of the sweetest people I know! ❤️
I’ve been blessed to know Brenda since I was 10 years old, married her son a few years later, and here we are. She’s been part of my life for over four decades, and I’m so grateful for that.
Brenda is one of those genuinely kind, loving people who puts her family first and has a heart of gold. She’s simply a good egg, and anyone who knows her is better for it.
Wishing you a birthday filled with all the love, laughter, and joy you’ve given to so many of us over the years. We love you so much! by @vemangrum

Two years ago today, we met Odin in the Petco adoption corner. His sign on the front of his cage read: “hi, my name is Odin. I am 9 years old. I had a family who loved me and then they got a new dog who did not like cats. One of us had to go and I guess it was me. I never thought I’d be looking for a new home at this point but here I am.” So obviously, he came home with us. He’s an awesome guy and has blended in with our family seamlessly. He is an amazing jumper and climber, loves meat and naps, and there is always an “Odin tax” if you eat something tasty within paw’s reach. Sorry your first family were jerks and we’re so glad you’re a part of ours now.
Now he’s 11, spoiled, adored, and living his best life. Happy Gotcha Day, Odin. Your story took a turn, but it brought you right where you belong. by @vemangrum
