POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This past year has been weird. For 20 years I’ve felt like an industry outsider - but stayed in it out of spite by creating projects independently because I know I have valuable perspectives to share 🤷🏿‍♂️.

I (kinda) gave up on seeking validation from it - then an amazing opportunity to merge my passion for design, basketball and social justice came along that I felt was worth acknowledging. When I found out I was going to win something, I experienced a complicated wave of emotions from joy to frustration and everything in between. For now I’ll focus on gratitude.

Thank you to @bucketsandborders for the amazing work you do and the volunteers and sponsors that make it possible. Thank you to the judges who determined this work to be worthy of an award and thanks to @willstrickland1 for giving me the nudge to submit to Buckets & Borders’ open call.

I ain’t new to this shit 😤

Salute To My Guy, A @FullCourt21CA-Halifax Day One, @VereDuaneJones aka Mr. @ArtPaysMe aka An Amazing Defender On The Basketball Court Also Known As #NFL (No Free Lunch!).

He's Been An Active Participant x Community Partner Of The World's Most Unique Basketball Tournament In Haliwood, Halifornia For Years.

When I Heard That @BucketsAndBorders, Along With @CanadaBasketball, Were Refurbishing Courts There, Selfishly, I Initially Hoped It Would Be Where We Host Our Tournament.

But, No Matter What Court Was Destined To Get The Grand Treatment, There Was No Other Person Better Suited Than Duane Jones To Handle The Task.

He Is An Incredible Person, Artist, Father, Husband x Friend.

I Am Proud Of Him x His Continued Contributions To All Things Good On This Planet.

Thank You, Brother.

I am. I was.

Exploring themes of identity, I am. I was. is a collection of works that explore Jones’ early aspirations to feel safe, secure and respected by developing the physique and abilities of comic book characters and the ‘80s/’90s action stars who personified them through a specific performance of masculinity.

I am. I was. asks the viewer to consider who we are when something that we have made a core part of our identity no longer serves us.
