It’s Mother’s Day.

I should be waiting for you to wake up in America so I can call you. Instead I’m sitting here feeling the gaping emptiness of your absence.

I brought this picture back with me. I talk to it often. To tell you about my day. To show you the roses in the gardens I can see from my window. To ask you for advice.

When I see this picture I become aware of how I am the same age you were when you became a mother. MY mother.

Were you nervous?
Were you excited?
Was I a good enough baby?

I guess I was. In this picture you’re holding onto me so tight. So the wind didn’t blow me off the bridge.

I have no memory of this trip to Yosemite. I’m glad I have the pictures though.

I love you, Mom. I miss you. Happy Mother’s Day 💖 by @verityeph

As some of you may or may not know, my mom Elise was in the final stages of her journey living with Low Grade Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma (LGESS). She had been under the care of Freedom Hospice in Fort Worth since November of last year.

On Wednesday night, under the light of the full moon, Elise experienced a scary health event and we immediately called hospice. A short time later we had a house full of supplies and a nurse with us to ease her transition and keep her comfortable. My brother Nathanael arrived in the middle of the night, and we were all together as a family as she transitioned.

Elise passed on into the Great Love around 9pm on Easter Sunday, April 5th. She was surrounded by her family.

Thank you to our friends and community at Broadway Baptist Church, Trader Joe’s, and at Freedom Hospice: Samantha, Greg, Diane, Pam, Amanda, and Jon.

We know so many people loved her, and we covet your prayers and well wishes at this time.

💖 Leland, Verity, and Nathanael

Baxter crossed over the rainbow bridge last night 🌈

On November 12, 2016, I found this tiny, emaciated, flea- and worm-ridden frightened little pup on the side of the road. We brought him home and he quickly became my baby. The family named him Baxter.

As a puppy he would sleep beside me, and crawl into my lap to be held on my shoulder like an infant. As he grew he never stopped being a lap dog, even when he got huge.

He lived out his days chasing birds in my grandfather’s yard, playing fetch, dozing in the sun and on the couch, being an annoying little brother to my grandfather’s dog Molly, and then being an annoyed big brother to my brother’s dog Trixie.

We kept each other sane during the pandemic by going on long walks on the country roads of West Texas.

He barked too much and was scared of new people, sometimes even a bit aggressive. But damn he was a good dog. He was mine.

He came to us in the same year that we said goodbye to my childhood pup Midge. God knew we needed a family dog, so Baxter found us.

We don’t deserve dogs. 💖 by @verityeph

When you can’t bring Mom to Italy to show her your favorite art, you bring Italy to her 🖼️

What a joy to visit @kimbellartmuseum in Fort Worth. Judith Slaying Holofernes by Carovaggio was breathtaking! by @verityeph

It was 85 degrees today ✨

Be honest…how noticeable is the bump from taking a crystal decanter on the noggin yesterday?

Anyway…it’s still Christmas until I say so. Give your loved ones an extra squeeze every time you say goodbye. 💖 by @verityeph
