We talk so much about scissoring technique, but the finish you create with your scissors starts long before you ever pick them up….

For me, good prep is everything. Bathing, drying, brushing, stretching the coat and making sure every hair is sitting exactly where I want it — because the better the prep, the easier it is to create that beautiful, clean finish afterwards.

Prep takes time, but it’s time I would never skip or rush.

What style of scissor do you pick up most when grooming?

Which scissors should I pick up when…?
It’s probably one of the questions I get asked most when I’m teaching or replying to your messages at The Coat, and the answer isn’t always as simple as use this scissor for this job

Choosing my scissors is less about following rules and more about asking

What am I trying to achieve with this coat?

Do I want to remove bulk?
Create shape?
What’s the coat texture like?
Get a really clean, precise finish?
Soften something?
Or just make those final tiny tweaks?

The more experience you get, the more instinctive that decision becomes, but understanding why you’re reaching for a particular pair can make such a difference to your scissoring.

Usually I go for a U shape but I did a V shape in this example…

Yes I did cover up her modesty as I know some of you hate to see their bits n bobs 😆

Today I’m giving this lovely doodle some short practical rounded ears, she is nervous for the grooming process, I’ve only groomed her a few times but with some kind words and reassurance she is gaining confidence and my trust.
