10 things my first year building MAISON MOTEMA @maisonmotema taught me. What started as an idea quickly became an education in craftsmanship, production, pricing, cash flow, distribution, retail, relationships, and resilience! The most rewarding part has been watching MAISON MOTEMA become real: made by our artisans in Dakar, carried by customers in New York, Paris and beyond, discovered by buyers, and developing its own design language. I’m only one year in, and still learning every day. Year one was about proving the idea. As we approach year two, I know it’s about building the business and our vision forward. They say you can tell when a designer truly loves the women she designs for. For Verlaine Diane @verlainediane, that love begins with the women who shaped her long before Maison Motema was born. The Maam Collection is an homage to the generations that came before her — her grandmother, her mother, and the many women whose strength, elegance, and quiet resilience inspired her vision of womanhood. In many West African cultures, Maam is a word of respect for a woman of wisdom and stature. The collection carries that spirit: pieces designed for women who move through the world with purpose, dignity, and presence. Each @maisonmotema bag is crafted by artisans in Senegal, where leatherwork and bronze casting remain living traditions. Every detail reflects a dialogue between heritage craftsmanship and contemporary design — objects meant to accompany women through the rhythm of their lives. More than accessories, these bags are tributes to the women who carry them. Allow me to re-introduce myself🤎 Welcome home! I am Verlaine-Diane, Friends call me V. I am the founder of Comptoir BantuDesi and the Unbound Living creations born from a simple but powerful truth: when women rise, communities thrive. From my African and Indian roots, I carry the stories of women farmers, artisans, and dreamers who work with their hands and hearts. My mission is to honor their craft, create with integrity, and share slow luxury that nurtures both body and soul. This is more than wellness or tea. It is about reclaiming time, choosing rituals over rush, and building communities with purpose. If you believe in living with intention, choosing consciously, and empowering women through what you wear and sip — you are already part of my tribe. Follow @verlainediane @bantudesiteas along for rituals, reflections, and creations designed to remind you of your own power. Tell me where you’re from, and what ritual grounds you? Love always, V. SOMEWHERE IN TIME “The Art of Being” Episode 01 — There Is Still Time We spend so much of our lives chasing time, forgetting that life is happening in between. Somewhere between the noise of the city, the passing strangers, and the sun setting over New York, there is a reminder that not every moment needs a purpose. Some moments are simply meant to be lived. There is still time. And this moment is yours. Love always, V. #SomewhereInTime #NewYorkDiaries #TheArtOfBeing #CinematicDiary by @verlainediane

I’ve come to realize that being a founder is never stopping you always keep going. A few moments from my week building MAISON MOTEMA @maisonmotema in New York: conversations, creative ideas, time with our handbags, and the many details that go into bringing a vision to life. Some days are full of meetings and new possibilities. Others are quieter, spent thinking through decisions, solving problems, and finding the next step. Building a house takes patience. It asks you to hold on to the vision while learning, adapting, and continuing to show up. I’m grateful for everyone who has been part of this journey so far: the people who wear our pieces, share our story, open doors, and believe in what we are creating. A little note from my week. More to come. Love always, V. #MaisonMotema #FounderDiary #WomenInMotion #NewYork #founder BuildingABrand by @verlainediane
