Huts and trails that foster adventure, conservation, and inclusive outdoor experiences for ALL.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
This summer the snowboard boots swapped for hiking boots.

The crew headed to Vermont for an overnight outdoor leadership experience with Vermont Huts. Camping, hiking, filtering our own water, and plenty of time outside made for a few days we won’t forget.

Different terrain. Same crew. New experiences.

Big thanks to @vermonthuts for having us. @arcteryxnewyork for the gear, and the @we_are_justice_outside Grant that made this all possible.

The Heart of the Greens Loop is the first completed multi-day segment of the Velomont, a shared project between VT Huts & VMBA. Serving up super singletrack and supported by backcountry huts, the trail connects communities and hints at the exciting future of the Velomont.

Our own Riley Momenee recently completed the loop, packing all 38 miles into one challenging, fun-filled day.

Read about his experience and learn more about the Heart of the Greens at the 🔗 in our bio.

An update from our executive director...

Dear Vermont Huts & Trails community,

As the leaves begin to fall and the Green Mountains give way to hues of golden, red, and yellow, I find myself looking forward to the first snow of the year. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take all the sunshine we can get before stick season, but the evolution from summer to fall in New England is one I’ve always loved, so it's fitting that I share with you today a transitional update here at Vermont Huts & Trails.

After 10 years at the helm of this amazing organization, I will be stepping down as VHT’s executive director. This is a decision I made on my own after much reflection and consideration. At the end of the day, I simply want to spend more time with my family—ideally in huts and on trails!

I am, however, excited to share that I am not leaving VHT. Instead, I will transition into a part-time role focused on facilitating new hut and trail projects. This move will allow me to prioritize the type of work that helped build the organization a decade ago, and it will create space for me to show my kids (who still think their dad is cool) the magic of Vermont—all while remaining on staff to ensure a smooth transition and offer continued advisory support.

It’s worth noting that I work with some of the best people in the world, and I am grateful to be able to continue working with them. This has always been a herculean team effort, and I’m extremely proud of the positive impacts we’ve created across the state in relatively short order. Since we launched in 2016, we’ve:

- Expanded the network to 22 huts (with another hut and hostel on the horizon)
- Hosted over 60,000 hut guests
- Built over 32 miles of new and/or improved Velomont Trail and brought over 100 miles to shovel-ready status
- Hosted nearly 300 FOREST Program participants
- Partnered to conserve thousands of acres, support local economies, and increase access to outdoor recreation
- Secured nearly $10 million in private and public funding to support the organization’s mission

BIG news, BIG opportunity...

THIS SATURDAY the 26th we are hosting a VOLUNTEER DAY at our soon-to-be Vermont Huts & Trails hostel (pictured) in Randolph, VT. Please join us as we kick off the renovation of this exciting project, demo-ing the interior to make way for updated accommodations.

Please RSVP for our volunteer day via link in bio.

In case you missed it...
We purchased this building about a year ago with the intention of creating in-town accommodations for backcountry travelers and visitors, alike. This hostel will share the key attributes of its hut counterparts that align with our mission to make outdoor recreation more accessible for all:

✔ ADA-friendly
✔ Close proximity to outdoor recreation and/or @velomonttrail -adjacent
✔ Lodging priced affordably as possible

We're also looking forward to being part of a strong community of local businesses and having a positive impact on the local economy. Stay tuned for updates! by @vermonthuts

The Roadless Rule protects 45 million acres of National Forest land across the country - including protected forest locally in VT and NH. The USDA has proposed rescinding the Roadless Rule, removing the protections currently in place.

Over 10,000 miles of mountain biking trails, including many iconic destinations across the US, are protected by the Roadless Rule. A rollback could open these areas to development fundamentally changing the outdoor recreation experience.

The comment period is open NOW through September 20, 2026. This is your chance to let your voice be heard and help protect the trails the outdoor community enjoys.

Trails are the connective tissue that weaves everyone together. This was evident this weekend in Rochester - on a solo ride, I randomly met four dudes at the top of the mountain as I heard their Philly/South Jersey accent. We linked up to go ride the new @ridgeline802 / @ld_trailworks Big Dog Trail.
I then rolled into the @bigtownvermont Wild and Scenic Film Festival where locals, activists, conservationists, and recreational enthusiasts gathered to celebrate their passion of the outdoors and the arrival of @vermontadaptive to the community.
It all commenced with a pizza party behind @greenmountainbikes with the @vmba802, @velomonttrail, @vermonthuts crews and suds from @rutlandbeerworks.

HUT HIGHLIGHT—Hunger Mountain Hut; Worcester, VT

Whatever your recreational appetite—biking, hiking, chilling—Hunger Mountain Hut serves up hearty helpings.

This true retreat offers four-season usability, access to miles of trails, and room for eight guests. Not to mention off-grid luxuries like a WOOD-FIRED SAUNA, large deck, and four-burner propane stove for cooking your backcountry feasts. Mmm...delicious!

Fun Fact: Hunger Mountain was named around the 19th century after a group of hunters struggled to find food in the area. So make sure you bring plenty of snacks! by @vermonthuts

Scouting and building! Steve from @sovt_trails recently showed our Trail Project Manager, Merrick, the trail improvements they completed along the Somerset Connector—which currently serves as a private access road and double-track @vtvast trail, and is planned to become part of the future @velomonttrail corridor. This important connection will help link the Mount Snow area to the @catamounttrail along Somerset Reservoir.

During the visit, they stopped to take in the view from the new bridge, that we built last summer in partnership with the Catamount Trail Association on Great River Hydro land. All in all, this is a great example of the strong partnerships coming together to create this exciting new trail. by @vermonthuts
