Turtle hatching season in Vero Beach 🐢

It’s a lucky few that witness a turtles first foray into the world. Seeing sea turtles make their way into the ocean is an unforgettable and magical experience. However, sea turtle hatchlings have a famously tricky start to life.

Once sea turtles hatch, they navigate their way to the ocean while picking up cues from the beach which will later help them find their way back to the nest. It is advisable to stay at a safe distance to avoid trampling the baby turtles, and it is best to allow them to make their way to the ocean without touching or handling them.

Once they’re in the water, they’ll kick with their flippers until they get to the open sea. Here they stay protected from most predators until they grow and their shells harden.

It is estimated only 1/1000 hatchlings survive until adulthood. The first steps of their journey can be the most difficult. If you are lucky enough to witness a sea turtle hatching event, make sure you follow these best practices to allow the hatchlings to reach the sea safely:

1. Keep your distance
2. Turn off any lights you are using
3. Crouch down low
4. Be quiet
5. Stay behind or to the side of the hatchlings
6. If the hatchlings head in the wrong direction, try and create natural barriers like piles of sand to encourage them to go the other way towards the ocean.

@mckeebotanicalgarden is an 80-acre tropical hammock in Vero Beach. 🌴🍃

In 1932, Arthur G. McKee and Waldo E. Sexton employed landscape architect William Lyman Phillips, from the esteemed firm of Frederick Law Olmsted, to design the basic infrastructure of streams, ponds and trails while they focused their efforts on assembling one of the most outstanding collections of waterlilies and orchids – augmenting native vegetation with ornamental plants and exotic specimens from around the world.

By the 1940’s, more than 100,000 tourists were visiting the Gardens each year, deeming it one of Florida’s earliest and most popular natural attractions.
