It is difficult to know where to begin with Charles Csuri. His life reads almost like several lives lived at once: a college football star, a soldier awarded the Bronze Star for heroism, a painter and sculptor, and ultimately one of the most important pioneers of computer art.

After the war, Csuri returned to Ohio State and turned his attention back to art. He taught alongside Roy Lichtenstein, who became a close friend and later his best man. At the same time, Csuri was exhibiting in New York and became part of a generation of artists who would change the course of art.

Csuri began working with computers in 1964, at a time when the art world had little interest in what these machines might offer artists. Over the next six decades, he continued to experiment with code, randomness, colour and three-dimensional form, helping to shape computer art and animation as we know them today. His influence also lives on through the generations he taught and mentored, many of whom went on to work at Pixar, Disney and Industrial Light & Magic.

This October, SOLOS is honoured to present *Ordo*, an artist-curated generative series created in 2017. Bringing together tools and ideas Csuri had refined over decades, the works feature abstract, ribbon-like forms that twist, overlap and float through three-dimensional space.

The series remained unreleased on Csuri’s computer during his lifetime, despite his intention to bring it into the world. It is a privilege to now share it in close collaboration with his daughter and artist, Caroline Csuri.❤️ by @verse_works

Charles Csuri (1922- 2022) was making computer art as early as 1964 - long before the computer became a tool of contemporary art.

In 1968, his work was acquired by MoMA and he was included in Cybernetic Serendipity, Jasia Reichardt’s landmark exhibition at the ICA that helped introduce computer art to a wider art audience.

He was also awarded the first National Science Foundation grant ever given to an artist, supporting his pioneering work using computers to create art. The Smithsonian later described him as “the father of digital art and computer animation.”

His work laid the foundations for so much of the digital and generative art being made today, including by many of the artists I’m lucky enough to work with.

So I’m particularly thrilled to be working with his daughter, the artist Caroline Csuri, to bring a series of previously unreleased works from his personal files to SOLOS (minted on @verse_works) this October.

A massive thanks to @ragnar_digital who introduced us to Caroline Csuri. I really couldn't have been more grateful for this introduction 🤍 taken in The Internet by @verse_works

this is my most ambitious artwork to date released exclusively on @verse_works as of now.

probably the most technically so far, every token is generated from a hash that takes data from the sun, moon, time and observer/collector coordinates, creating its own permanent body and changing how that body appears over time.

it has 1 of 35,781,046,272 possible unique artworks, this has embedded 35,781,046,272 poems and 35,781,046,272 3D elements, always unique. by @verse_works

Met Digital is pleased to present Society of the Spectacles, a solo exhibition by London-based artist @RJ16848519. Through a series of pixel drawings centred on smart glasses, the exhibition explores how digital technologies transform us into both observers and the observed, continually reshaping perception, identity, and everyday life.

Following last year's group exhibition Ghost in the Shell, we return to @glue_berlin, an underground space housed in the former beer cellars of the Alte Königstadt Brewery (Alte Königstadtbrauerei). The opening will take place on Friday, July 24, from 18:00 to 21:00, at Strassburger Strasse 53, deep beneath Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg district.

The artist will be present, and summer drinks will be served. Feel free to join us for an evening of conversation and celebration!

Ed Fornieles | Borrowed Lives: Anon

999 pieces going live Monday 6 July, 6pm BST | 1pm EST

🔗 in bio

Borrowed Lives: Anon is a series of 999 artworks by Ed Fornieles that follows the visual world of Anon, a fictional teenage boy growing up on the internet.

As Anon moves through memes, online communities, gaming worlds, and digital subcultures, the images he encounters begin to shape his understanding of himself and the world around him. The series explores how identity is increasingly formed through the endless stream of visual culture we consume online, and how belonging is often found through shared images, aesthetics, and digital communities.

Created using custom-built software and vast online image archives, the works sit between collage and moving image, reflecting the fragmented way we experience images today. Rather than telling a linear story, each artwork captures a moment in Anon's development, building into a broader portrait of a life shaped by the internet.

Edward Fornieles (b. 1983) is a London-based artist renowned for his innovative, interdisciplinary approach to contemporary art. Fornieles' work spans sculpture, installation, and digital media, delving into themes of social behavior, technology, and data manipulation. His immersive simulations construct and enact alternative political and social spaces, often involving cultural and infrastructural production.

His work, reflecting a deep engagement with the digital age's complexities, has been exhibited internationally. Recent exhibitions include Inside Out 2 at Carlos/Ishikawa, London; Cute at Somerset House, London; Worldbuilding at Centre Pompidou-Metz and JSC Düsseldorf; Cel at CCA Futura, Prague; and The Finiliar at Arsenal, New York.

Ed Fornieles holds an M.A in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art and a BFA from the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, University of Oxford. by @verse_works

Borrowed Lives: Anon explores how what we see online can shape who we are. Comprising 999 works, the project is based on the fictional character Anon, a teenager searching for meaning, identity, and belonging. Presented through a series of moving-image works, it charts his journey into adulthood through the images, communities, and cultures he encounters online.

Like many teenagers, Anon ventures into meme boards, online game worlds, and the darker corners of the internet. Here, he begins to find both himself and the tools he needs to navigate the world around him. As he becomes fluent in this culture, the dynamic begins to shift: he is no longer simply consuming images and memes; they begin to shape him in return.

Organised into chapters of nine works, each artwork marks a moment in Anon’s development. Together, they form a larger story about growing up, belonging, and identity in the internet age.
