Randy was one of our Warrant Officer Apache pilots. In a previous life Randy had been an Army Ranger. He was not only tabbed, but he also was scrolled on his right sleeve from days gone past. He was the quintessential Warrant Officer with the flare of Ranger blood still flowing through his veins.

Randy would do a functional fitness workout on the concrete path between the Tactical Operation Center (TOC) and the gate every morning, which was about 100 meters away, shirtless and in short, green “Ranger Panties” with an after-market kit and with personally procured ballistic-tolerant steel plates as a weight vest.

He wore an American flag bandana across his forehead and bronze-lens Pit Viper sunglasses as eye-pro.

Randy took personal offense to the Combat Shirt restriction in the chow hall and used his ingenuity and ego to change the situation himself. To start, Randy printed out forty replacement signs that read, “COMBAT SHIRTS ARE NOW AUTHORIZED IN THE CHOW HALL.”

During cleaning hours, which prohibited entry, Randy walked in through the side door and replaced every restrictive sign with the new, self declaration signs. No one questioned it. Even our Task Force Commander, who commonly flew with us on combat missions outside the wire and loved the Combat Shirt, immediately started wearing his into the Chow Hall. taken in Afghanistan by @vertical_speed
