45 FRIDAY - Another aural assortment for your review on #45friday. I’ve never managed to find a copy of the “The Mail Must Go Through” album - either pressing - but happy to have this great 2-sided seven inch in the collection. “Funky Woman” is a grower, reminds me of a Richard Evans production. The Redd Holt 45 is rather full-on, heavy drums and analogue synth belches. Finally, you can play both sides of this Curtis Liggins 45, I chose the northern sounding “What It Is” to share with you. The “Funky Monkey” flip is also worth a groove down to. ⬅️👆🏼➡️ for label photos and soundclips… Hope you enjoy the music✌🏼❤️ #vinylvulture #verygoodplus #funk45 #soul45 by @verygoodplus
45 FRIDAY - Another aural assortment for your review on #45friday. The Jake Wade I used to find quite often and flip to friends, although it’s now dried up and I almost traded away this last copy by mistake a few years back. Alcohol is a cruel mistress at times… “The Little You Say” was one of the first truly funky Island Funk records I heard. I can’t remember who played it to me (it’ll have been one of the London lot) but I recall it being on a red Wirl label. Imagine my ?? when I found a copy on a yellow label. The advent of Discogs solved the question; the red label is the US issue, the yellow label is a pressing from Barbados. I love the A Bem Sole label, so much so I completed the discography this past year. This Kenny & Larry release is a true 2-sider, I could have picked either side to share with you. WDJ is W.D. Jordan who released this JB-alike record in the 70’s and then a boogie tune in the early 80’s. ⬅️👆🏼➡️ for label photos and soundclips… Hope you enjoy the music✌🏼❤️ #vinylvulture #verygoodplus #funk45 #soul45 by @verygoodplus
45 FRIDAY - Random finds whilst putting other records away after last weekend’s trip into London. That was my first music event after a self-imposed hibernation this summer, I should up the pace a little as I really enjoy myself. I now have a headcold that I blame myself for, as I must have hugged one hundred strangers… 🤧 The Darker Shades of Black on S.E.X - that would get anyone’s spidey senses tingling. It’s a cool and funky groover out of Chicago. The drums are already low in the mix before my recording somehow makes them almost inaudible. You’ll still feel the groove tho’. It doesn’t matter if it’s My Thing or You Thing, Hank Johnson is pretty sure that it’s somehow been lost. Haven’t listened to this swampy funker for a while. Raggedy Bag was an early 00’s Manchester find when I used to primarily dig for breaks and loops. These days, this 45 is wanted for the excellent ballad flip. I can’t work out if the Lonnie Lester had a northern scene or a R&B/Mod scene kinda sound. Either way, I like its strong beat. ⬅️👆🏼➡️ for label photos and soundclips… Hope you enjoy the music✌🏼❤️ #vinylvulture #verygoodplus #45friday #funk45 #soul45 by @verygoodplus
45 FRIDAY - Here are a selection of yellow label records I pulled whilst preparing my flight case for Saturday’s @welovemundoeclectico - some of these I haven’t thought about or listened to for a long time… I still shake my head wondering how the (signed) Ann Martin record ended up at a car boot fair in Bedfordshire. Icy Records - the one that gave us Ray & His Court - is a Florida based label and this 45 isn’t listed on Discogs. The flip side “Music In Me” is a decent cover too. A true oddity. Maybe a cabaret singer who sold her records to tourists in Miami..? Last week I found in my boxes the Gene Williams version of “Don’t Let Your Love Fade Away” on Forte and I convinced myself that I’d sold the Lee Fields version when “selling to dig” in Japan. I was happily proven wrong this week when I found it safe and sound and very much unsold. I prefer this version, it’s more raw sounding and has tougher drums. Ice Cold Love is a perfect double sider, wonderful sweet soul ❤️ Harlem Rumble I bought in @dustygroove Chicago over a decade ago when I used to work just south of the city. It’s the same track as the better-known Frank Foster 45. It’s a pile-driver of an instrumental. ⬅️👆🏼➡️ for label photos and soundclips… Hope you enjoy the music✌🏼❤️ #vinylvulture #verygoodplus #45friday #funk45 #soul45 by @verygoodplus
#TBT Thinking about digging in Kuala Lumpur a few years back and this belter picked up in @sputnikrekordz - they took all my birthday money and I left with some great music..! I also had this weekend’s @welovemundoeclectico in mind too as I’ll be playing some inner/outer space records with Billy and Geebo..! #vinylvulture #verygoodplus #malaysianmusic #darisuaralife by @verygoodplus

45 FRIDAY - Here is this weeks selection from the flight cases. I had one half of my brain thinking about next Saturday and DJing at @welovemundoeclectico so perhaps I lost my train of thought - more about next weekend later. So yeah, what we ended up with is a random bunch of frenetic funk records:- The Ricardo Marrero 45 (yes, *that Ricardo Marrero!) is one you don’t see often, never makes it into the shadow of that notorious album. I think it’s a banger. Just one record was released on BSP Soul City which feels like a shame. This 45 came from a UK shop in the early 00’s and doesn’t show up often. Rated X was purchased from Sound Library NYC on a 2010 trip, these days it’s sought after for the flip side ballad and rightly so. This copy of S.O.U.L has endured 20 years of me DJing the kahunas out of it, it’s seen more dirty needles than a sharps bin. Still, it prevails and I still love it, all scratchy styrene 2 minutes and 45 seconds of it. Oh, my labels are reversed - always makes for fun when cueing it whilst pissed up - anyone else have reversed labels..? ⬅️👆🏼➡️ for label photos and soundclips… Hope you enjoy the music✌🏼❤️ #vinylvulture #verygoodplus #45friday #funk45 #soul45 by @verygoodplus
#45FRIDAY “Yeah, that Lemco 211 is sought after on the northern scene” “Yeah, whatever, have you heard them smash out Midnight Rider on the flip?” 😮‍💨 Most of the Lemco catalogue could be found at George’s Song Shop in Johnstown PA. I went through the lot looking for another copy of this, on at least three visits and no joy. This copy came from an Aussie mate when I was in Melbourne circa 2010 and I’ve never seen another one. I think my Philly soul brother @skemerichards has a copy, but that’s it. Thumbs up in the comments if you dig this, double thumbs up if you have a copy. ✌🏼❤️ #vinylvulture #verygoodplus #lemco #45friday by @verygoodplus

Sharing some of my favourite deep soul 45’s. I first heard Frank Hutson on a mix CD back in 2005, that date is very accurate as I recall exactly who gave me that disc and who compiled the CD. I missed a couple that sold on eBay over the years but never gave up hope on finding a copy from a trusted seller. This happened just a year ago. Shout out @snoobz as his “Conductor Williams” edits on the intro always make me laugh. Frank Turner. I can’t remember when and where. I do remember doing a deep dive on that label and not turning up any more gold. Did I miss out..? Soul Chargers is my best find at Val’s, period. LT & Soulful Dynamics was sold to me by an old friend in Philly, on the understanding that I would love and cherish it forever. This was the early 2010’s and so I wanted it for the funk side, he told me I was wrong and in time he was proven correct, the slow side just kills it. There’s a great story involving multiple players on how deadstock Solo 45’s ended up in Philly all those years ago, but that’s not my story to tell… ⬅️👆🏼➡️ for label photos and soundclips… Hope you enjoy the music✌🏼❤️ #vinylvulture #verygoodplus #45friday #funk45 #soul45 by @verygoodplus
45 FRIDAY - Sharing four 45’s that might not be immediately recognisable to some folks, but please stop by and give them a listen… Fir-Ya is definitely another “b-side for the win” record, a lovely modern soul tune by George Perkins who released a few records out of New Orleans / Baton Rouge. The Jack Sass Band has a real nice gospel feel about it, again this is the flip side and better than the disco main side. Brafa I urge you to listen to, once you get past the disco lasers there is an excellent groove going on. Any record credited to “Big Dave” on a label called “Glitter Funk” should really get your attention. Superb boogie funk outta The ‘Burg and it’s a shame that this was the only release by the label. ⬅️👆🏼➡️ for label photos and soundclips… Hope you enjoy the music, wishing you all a great weekend..! ✌🏼❤️ #vinylvulture #verygoodplus #45friday #funk45 #soul45 by @verygoodplus
Just shifted a load of crates around and have got access to the India/Bolly shelves (again!)… think I should dive in and make a mix… it’s been a while since I last did one. I hope some of you checked out the 80’s Library mix that was posted up at @that0282place - the link is in their bio. It’s a good ‘un..! #vinylvulture #verygoodplus #indianmusic #bollywood #bappilahiri by @verygoodplus
