When @vanillaheavy asked me to be a part of her iconic tribute show for my favorite artist, Björk, I knew I had to do something special…

The concept for this animation is that it is illustrated by the five-year-old girl Björk sings about in “Birthday” by the Sugarcubes, which is a band she was a part of before her solo career.

The idea to animate in this style came from a strong desire to get my hands dirty with pastels.

Because I wanted everything to look very child-like and rudimentary, I tried not to spend more than two minutes on each drawing.

I also limited myself to about 60 frames, because art materials are expensive and that’s how much paper was in the notepad I bought.

Because so much of my work has been digital lately, I was keen to return to a more analog form of animation with physical props and sets made of paper.

I used to animate like this back in college (admittedly with a much more sophisticated setup) and it felt really cool to recreate this process with the resources I had on hand. It was a return to form!

This is my rinky dink setup teehee!!

My phone + living room table + desk lamp isn’t quite a mounted DSLR over a fancy light box, but it got the job done 👍

I’ve been trying to fight my perfectionist instincts by embracing imprecision. This meant not caring if the camera moved a little, or if the lighting didn’t match up to another scene, or if my pastel-covered fingers progressively dirtied each frame.

A past version of me would have tweaked out over these details, but the current version of me simply doesn’t have the time and knows a finished video is better than no video. I also knew this style created a lot of space for imperfection.

Animation is such a time-consuming art form, but it’s sooo rewarding. I love breathing life into still images.

Because I was so strapped for time, there was pretty minimal planning for this project, which meant I just had to move through it and trust my hands. A no-thought, smooth-brained, first-idea-best-idea kinda creative process that felt like play.

THIS FRIDAY! Meet @veryluckiii our first drag artist competing in Untitled (Art Star): Round 04: MAXIMALISM. 8-10PM @cmoneverybodybk / TIX IN BIO.

Each artist is asked to create a self-portrait with the theme in mind, in any way they wanted to best represent their vision of drag.

In the artist’s own words:

Luckiii is the shooting star that fell to earth when humanity wished for artful faggotry.

Luckiii is a drag thing, clown, makeup artist, graphic designer, animator, actor, model, dj, and aspiring ballerinx.

Luckiii loves collecting charming pieces of our universe and assembling them into new shapes that excite and delight.

Still over the moon about being part of @construct.zine Muses of Pride issue 🤩💫 We shot this on the roof of my apartment, and I pulled this look together the day of 😵‍💫😮‍💨

Lately I’ve been talking a lot about being on a new journey with my art and career, and this project was a gorgeous reminder of what happens when I trust myself, my instincts and capabilities.

This magazine is also a beautiful crystallization of NYC nightlife, and I’m honored to be a part of it. 17yr old me who worshipped the club kids couldn’t even imagine being in the same magazine as Amanda fucking Lepore, and 24yr old me who moved to New York bright-eyed and bushy-tailed wouldn’t believe it could happen so fast.

This past March I took @theydy.bedbug’s MC Intensive @baxarts, Drag 201, if you will.

As someone who has been a little frustrated with the cycle of weeks of rehearsal culminating in a short moment on stage, emceeing has opened up a whole new world of possibility for me.

I distilled my thoughts into this visual journal entry, which was really just an excuse to play with typography and share @mcpphoto.png’s beautiful photos. by @veryluckiii
