Happy Endangered Species Day! I think it’s really fitting that I graduated with my bachelor’s degree today, because I have spent the past 3 years working with my favorite endangered species.

Hellbenders are North America’s largest salamander and are fully aquatic. The Ozark subspecies has been listed as endangered since 2011 and the Eastern subspecies has been proposed to be listed as well. They’ve experienced major population declines mainly due to water pollution and habitat destruction.

The lab I worked for at MSU had a population of captive hellbenders used for conservation physiology research. I’ve spent hours and hours with these animals and they mean the world to me. I wish they got the same love and attention as some of the “cute and cuddly” endangered species. So if you have the time, take a second to learn about the hellbender, because even wet and slimy species deserve a little love too :) by @vetstudentlogan
