Analytical indexes, aka back of the book indexes, are more than just a list of every time specific words appear in the text. 📚✨

In a random Orlando neighborhood stands the house where Jack Kerouac lived in 1957-1958, where he finished “On the Road” and wrote all of “The Dharma Bums.” ✨

This post is a spinoff of the @asindexing “anatomy of an indexer” & it’s kind of a cliché that jiujiteiros — people who practice jiu jitsu — like to philosophize about how it applies to many (or all) aspects of life.

It is true, though. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) has a lot of lessons for life, but less commonly known is that it has a lot of parallels with book indexing! 🥷🏼📚

To excel in BJJ, as in book indexing, one should pay close attention to detail, be able to analyze what one is facing, be always ready to learn something new and similarly, have a curious spirit…and perseverance is absolutely crucial in both things. The love of books is a bonus when it comes to BJJ. 📚✨

@asindexing online learning courses & webinars are always super informative! 📚✨

There’s always something useful to learn, regardless of how familiar I am with a topic, so I usually jump at the chance to sign up to these courses, but this one is especially interesting for me — I have created embedded indexes several times for one client, which means I am familiar with one specific software & method for embedding an index in the book. 📚✨

I know that different publishers have a variety of requirements so I will have to be able meet their needs by learning to use another software, method of embedding, or document type for submission (Adobe indesign vs. Microsoft word, etc.). 📚

Needless to say: I will be attending this 3-part course. 📚✨

September 21 marked FIVE YEARS of VFJ Indexing & Word Services — which I happily upgraded to an LLC, last year! 📚✨

I’m so thankful for this experience and I look forward to many more years of “indexing & word services.” 📚✨

Here’s a quick post featuring an important #bookindexing #toolsofthetrade for an indexer’s reference shelf — the Merriam Webster biographical dictionary includes over 30,000 short biographies of key historical figures. 📚✨
