2025.

The concept of Food Sovereignty emphasises the right of people to have access to healthy and culturally integral food produced in ecologically sound and sustainable ways. It focuses on the idea that communities should have control over how their food is produced, sourced and consumed.
The movement originates as a response to industrialised agriculture and globalisation which undermines local food systems, harm the environment and diminish community autonomy.

The concept of food sovereignty is centred on a few key principles;

01) Cultural Identity- Food is integral with cultural identity.
Food sovereignty allows communities to preserve traditional agricultural practices and diets.

02) Environmental Sustainability- Sustainable farming practices are crucial for maintaining bio-diversity and combating climate change.
Food sovereignty promotes organic farming.

03) Local Economy- Supporting local farmers and markets strengthens local communities and economies. This reduces dependance on global supply chains and improves community resilience .

04) Healthier diets- Access to fresh, nutritious food can help combat poor diets and food insecurity.

05) Social justice-Food sovereignty advocates for the rights of marginalised populations, ensuring that everyone has a voice in decisions affecting their food systems.

06) Climate Resilience- Encouraging local food systems makes communities more resilient to Climate changes, as they adapt their agricultural practices to local conditions.
