πŸ“– Review πŸ“– Down Under by Bill Bryson If you're new to Bill Bryson's travel writing, start with A Walk in the Woods. It's hilarious and keeps you hooked as he attempts to walk the 2,000+ mile Appalachian Trail. Down Under is a collection of travel stories from Australia, without the overarching goal that makes A Walk in the Woods so compelling. I'd recommend it if you already love Bryson's humour or have travelled around Australia yourself. It's the kind of book where you chuckle at a funny incident or interesting fact, then move on without necessarily remembering much. I thoroughly enjoyed the first 30%, particularly his stories about Australia's deadly animals and plants, but eventually lost interest. I started reading it on my Kobo during my trip to Australia in May and got about 60% through before putting it aside. Recently, while reminiscing about my travels, I picked up my physical copy, and discovered that in Part 3, he covers places I've visited myself, including Tropical North Queensland, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory. I enjoyed this part immensely. I could picture everything he described and was struck by how, 25 years ago, Bryson had experienced many of the same things I did. There are truly remote parts of Australia that are enchanting in a way that's difficult to describe. Read Bryson for that. And just when I thought, on reaching page 407, that surely he'd exhausted his interesting stories, BAM! Along comes an incredible tale involving a sunken ship, a remote sandbar, and mutineers. I'd actually stopped at the spot where some of them were marooned, with absolutely no idea about its history! By the end, I wanted to write about some of my own bizarre travel experiences in this special country. And the moment I finished, I wanted to start reading the book all over again. I'm tempted to give it five stars because I enjoyed the final part so much. But, to be fair to the book as a whole, I'll settle on a healthy: My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Swipe to see a random selection of my travel moments from Australia. πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί Just a wild emu casually checking out what the humans are doing inside the hotel. πŸ“Exmouth, Western Australia Just a pi by @vibraryviews

πŸ“– Review πŸ“– The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, Volume 2 by Beth Brower With the groundwork laid in Volume 1, this instalment dives straight into a summer full of planned activities, unexpected adventures, and plenty of delightful chaos. All the new characters are so interesting, and somehow Emma gets entangled with every single one of them in the most hilarious and sometimes endearing ways. Without spoiling anything, just know that alongside the diary entries and letters, we also get secret notes being exchanged in this volume. This is an immediate win for me. Emma is doubly hilarious this time around, and I was thoroughly entertained. Volume 2 has me completely invested. I can't wait to see what Emma gets herself into next! My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Would you read a story told in diaries and letters? πŸ‘‡ #bookreviews #bookrecs #booksta #bethbrower #emmamlion by @vibraryviews

I borrowed it, but would I buy it? | Ep. 9 Yellowface by R.F. Kuang This book was so cleverly done. The ending wasn’t the best, but the rest of the book more than made up for it. I loved it even more on a reread. #bookstagram #yellowface #rfkuang #library #bookreels by @vibraryviews
πŸ“– Book Review πŸ“– Congo by Michael Crichton Genre: Science Fiction Thriller If you had asked me before 2023, when I became a voracious reader again, what my favorite book of all time was, I would have said Jurassic Park. Please go read it if you haven't. The book is so much more than what the movie shows. The story of Congo begins with a team of American geologists being brutally and mysteriously killed in an ancient lost city deep in the rainforests of Africa. Soon, an expedition is put together to uncover what happened and, of course, things do not go according to plan. Congo basically has the thrill of Jurassic Park without the dinosaurs. In classic Crichton-style, the story plays with human greed, excessive risk-taking, and our tendency to tamper with things we probably shouldn't. And once the expedition gets underway, things just keep going wrong. There are elements of danger that are really interesting and kept me hooked. Every chapter is fast-paced and packed with tension. There are so many moments where I had no idea what could possibly go wrong next, followed by one jaw-dropping moment after another. I loved every minute of it.
