Kormakao arts project’s aim is to provide young adults from dysfunctional homes and impoverished backgrounds with the opportunities they deserve—income and housing for their artistic abilities. Their talent is awe-inspiring and I’m lucky to have witnessed it.

Day 5: Playa Giron Museum

On one of the beaches of the Bay of Pigs, the Playa Girón Museum, exhibits and displays the American led invasion against Cuba in 1961. The invasion failed, the Cubans won, but multiple Cubans lost their lives, some soldiers, and some bystanders. My family states that some of our family members lost their lives. After going to Cuba, the urge to study my family history is STRONG. Each family fact I grew up with is becoming more and more poignant, and I want to explore the specifics—names, dates, get photos, y todo. Has anyone done any genealogy research? Do you have tips on where to start?

Back to my Cuba adventures: I have a new respect and understanding for Hemingway. After lectures and craft talks based on his life and works from the coolest guy ever @vtweeder , I learned that he was extremely misunderstood and dealt with some serious trauma. He had no tools to reconcile with this trauma or correct his unhealthy behaviors. Coupled with this, a LOT of Cubans consider him a Cuban writer because of how much he supported the Cuban people and how immersed he was in the culture (not in a weird way but in an authentic, caring way). I also nicknamed him Hemmy if anyone wants to get on that train🤸🏻‍♀️

Day 4, Pt 2: cigar factory tour (one of my fav tours ever), Lizt Alfonso Dance School, and meandering around Habana 💃🏻

I danced for around 20 years (ish? give or take) and watching the Lizt Alfonso Dance School allowed my writer brain to wander. Watching these fierce kids perform—already so talented and well trained at an early age—it made me think: if my family stayed here, would I have been one of these little girls? Dance was my everything and I’m certain that wouldn’t have changed if I was born in a different country, especially surrounded by a culture that values the arts so highly. I started to create a short story piece based on this thought: If I Were Her. Hope to share it with yall in the near future!!

Day 3, pt3: Hotel Nacional visit with Joaquín Cuartas, prize-winning Cuban radio writer (and the funniest guy you’ll ever meet).

Hotel Nacional was made when the mob was running around/controlling Cuba—remember Godfather II? Yeah, this is where that meeting was supposed to be held.
