“I like seeing them cry.” 😱 I love being with someone who loves the theater as much as I do and is working everyday to carve out his space there. We were all supposed to have tea and lunch with this woman because her social calendar was unrivaled. How could a person, let alone an 82-year human person pack all the things she was planning in one day… dim sum, mahjong, family time, readings, rehearsals, shows, more shows, meals, more meals and of course, more and more meals. Her appetite for life was uncanny. In an industry/town/world where the pressures can get you down, somehow our sweet Wai possessed an unflinching capacity to live. To quote my own goddamn work, “Her energy rivaled that of the Energizer Bunny.” She was fierce, firm, incredibly capable. In our production of Bald Sisters, when I told her the play would end with her singing a karaoke version of “Rhythm of the Rain” while the platform below her lifted her into the air… in the dark… as fog swirled around her… with only a microphone stand to hold onto… she gave me one of her trademark mischievous smiles and said, “Oh. Okay.” Of course she was breathtaking in it, as she’s been time and time again. Everyone has a story working with her. And everyone was incredibly protective of her because we all knew what she meant to us. She was that rare mix of legend and just another one. She built the floor and then danced on it with us. She was a true black box gremlin, and I believe that she actually loved working in the theater. Many say they do, but she really did. I loved sitting across from her at a dinner table. I loved walking with her to the train or from rehearsal or to another meal. I loved that she fit perfectly in the crooks of all our arms. I loved that she was so small and hard of hearing and we were all mostly Asian, so you ended up kind of bowing to her all the time. I loved how she would hold onto you. I loved watching her become everyone’s family. I loved watching her ascend into karaoke heaven every night, as people stood up, wiped away their tears, and sang along with this marvel of a human. I loved her very much. Oh Wai, you are the best of us. May we all rise to your love for life. 🪩 📸: @michaelbrosilowphoto by @vichetchum
