⚙ 'Cycles and Sequences: Research Currents in Animation' ⚙ is an exhibition of expanded animation running from 10-4pm on July 14th- 25th at the James Hockey Gallery, University for the Creative Arts, Falkner Road, Farnham, Surrey, GU9 7DS. The exhibition includes a range of interdisciplinary approaches to animation by staff and PhD students at UCA ranging from installation, sequential drawings, animated documentary, experimental CGI, AI, animation machines and live 16mm performances. We are pleased to include guest artist Max Hattler. Exhibition and events are curated by Vicky Smith.
Participating artists: Will Bishop-Stephens, Jordan Buckner, Jingyue Chang, Hattie Croucher, John Dargan, Vesi Dashinova Jamie Dobson, Stephen Featherstone, Miriam Fox, Griffin Gu, Nicky Hamlyn, Max Hattler, Birgitta Hosea, Ciara Kerr, Belle Mellor, Martin Pickles, Vicky Smith, Emmanuelle Waeckerle.

Join us at @aspexportsmouth for Communal: PAX (Pompey Analogue Experiments)

PAX is holding a pop-up installation of experimental analogue film technology, including projections of Super 8, 16mm film and 35mm slides.

PAX is a Portsmouth-based but Solent-wide, informal collective dedicated to exploring and expanding analogue audiovisual practices.

If you are an artist already working with analogue methods, we would love to meet you and share thoughts on how PAX could be useful to you and how it could support experimental practice.

Anyone interested in analogue audiovisual methods is welcome - got an old super-8 camera or roll of film, love shooting on a 35mm film? Come along!

Vicky Smith - Animated Matter. October 22nd, 20:15 - Close Up Cinema, London

"The first in a series of screenings at Close-Up Cinema (London) that corresponds with a new book by Simon Payne, Experimental Cinema: Structures, Systems and Strategies. Vicky Smith has been making 16mm films since the late 1980s. Many of her films and film-performances have involved directly inscribing and recording physical actions, gestures and objects onto the filmstrip, by way of punctured holes, scratching, abrasion, printing with footsteps, bodily fluids, bicycle tyre tracks, and photograms of insects. Her films are energetic, materialist, corporeal and in that respect unruly. At the same time, their visual and aural rhythms directly relate to the metrical pulse of the film projector.

Vicky Smith will be present to introduce and discuss her work."

The appearance of the human figure, altered through filming and processing methods (overexposure, repeat superimposition, macro), is further defamiliarised in the live screening event through doubled projection.
