Some of the visual research that inspired key moments in The Assassin's Head and The HelsinkiFerry.

The Queen of the Night, for example, is used in The Assassin's Head as a trope by one character to entrap another.

And, for The Helsinki Ferry, the atmospheric dock cranes of St Petersburg helped me imagine how foreign currency could be smuggled out of Russia in the early 1990s.

And it's always a joy to lift the lid on the handy shoebox where research bits are stored! by @vicky_j_payne_author

The 1897 Woman At Home anthology is a gem, offering tips and guidance that hasn't really changed that much. I was much taken by Mrs Clifford a journalist who loved London with its 'great throbbing heart' ... by @vicky_j_payne_author

We stopped off in Dawlish on our week away and found this lovely shop run by John. I could have spent hours in there.

I emerged with a book about the Thames (I collect books about London's history). A gem from 1906 with colour plates. I particularly like this one of Battersea. The prints are protected by tissue pages which are so pleasing.

My husband @andrewward_photography surprised me with this wonderful wooden typewriter. My lucky talisman. by @vicky_j_payne_author

What you write with matters...

I always have a basic biro and a squared pad at my left hand - and in my bag.

But I've always loved old typewriters and sometimes wish I'd kept the little yellow portable that travelled the world.

The pen was a gift from my daughter when The Assassin's Head was published, engraved with a quote that introduces the book. I save the pen for the big moments.

And this was definitely one of them - signing a copy of The Helsinki Ferry at the launch.

Walking along a street near where I live, I saw this book of Russian fairy stories left out on a wall for anyone passing by.

With part of The Helsinki Ferry set in Russia, it felt like a coincidence that stopped me in my tracks. Not long after, I found a tiny Russian doll in the gutter in Stoneybatter, Dublin. She now stares at me from under my desktop screen!

Sign or coincidence, they've become small treasures. by @vicky_j_payne_author

...Sonia lowered her voice to a whisper, an old habit from the days when no one exchanged a confidence in public without first checking they could not be overheard.'

Welcome to the world of The Helsinki Ferry - fear, secrecy and the past refusing to stay buried.
