Phenomenal presentation of #RobertRyman work @barbicancentre coinciding with a London visit.🙌 (NOT an accident!)
'The Real Thing' needs to be seen in real life. ---------------------
Still pinching myself 27 years later thinking about the generous studio visit I received from him, precisely when I most needed it (as a young grad-school traumatized artist).
If you're in London and you love painting or the in-between do yourself a favor and see this.🤍

In Victoria Haven’s Linguistic Architecture drawings, she begins to abstract her graphite alphabet, transforming each letter into dark, inky rectangles with bright scarlet notations. Stripped of the actual letters, the words remain as only an echo of the informing system.

THE HEROINES remains on view through September 26, 2026.

Featured in Victoria Haven’s exhibition THE HEROINES is a series of graphite drawings titled The Heroines Alphabet. These works use the title of the show as a system for revealing hidden words. Placed in a grid, Haven connects adjacent letters in ‘The Heroines’ to form new words, some with multiple readings or meanings.

THE HEROINES remains on view through September 26.

Residencies have always had a great impact on my work and process. I started this one off a year ago on a cat-sitting 'residency', continued working it out on an island... those layers are in there. 🙏 @simpsome and @landhausvashon

The 5th element of 4 Channel Medusa. Not just for sunny days. If you're afraid that you'll be turned to stone you can peer at her reflection. ⚠️ 😎 @pdxcontemporaryart #vichavenstudio ---------------/---
The Heroines is an exhibition that unfolds in several movements throughout the gallery space – each piece building in conversation with the next.

The progression opens with a pre-amble to ‘The Heroines’ with the outlier, 4-Channel Medusa, a series of unique silk screens created at the former Rauschenberg Residency, in Captiva, FL. The chaotic marks in each print writhe in a vaguely rectangular mass. The double mirroring presented as a grid implies discipline, setting up a tension between the container of the rectangle/frame and the formlessness of unruly chaos within. by @victoria.haven

Shout out and big thanks to Maggie Mann @mmann.jpeg who, as I mentioned in the talk this weekend, assisted me in the studio this past year and was up for last minute making and wearing(!) the legend to 'The Heroines' Alphabet' series of graphite drawings, just in time for the opening celebration. Each of these drawings is a 'title piece' for my show #THEHEROINES. There are 15 (like Ovid's) which are doubled by 15 additional works in the gallery: drawings, painting, bronzes and soundscape. If you can, please go see it and hear it! It's up through Saturday, Sept 26th at #pdxcontemporaryart 🙏❤️ taken in PDX CONTEMPORARY ART by @victoria.haven
