A massive ocean wave is making its way toward Greater Victoria, but it’s not the kind of wave you might be imagining. 🌊

Known as a Kelvin wave, the phenomenon is expected to reach BC’s coastline around mid-October and could temporarily raise ocean levels around Greater Victoria.

Unlike a tsunami, it won’t come crashing onto shore. Instead, it causes a gradual rise in sea levels as it moves along the coastline.

Scientists say a similar wave earlier this year raised ocean levels by more than 30 centimetres in some parts of BC.

The biggest concern is if the higher water levels combine with strong winds, storms or unusually high tides, potentially increasing the risk of localized coastal flooding.

While significant impacts aren’t currently expected, residents living near the water are encouraged to keep an eye on weather conditions and tide forecasts.

For most people, the wave isn’t expected to affect daily life, but those living along low-lying coastal areas should keep an eye on changing conditions. by @victoria_buzz

What’s better than supporting local businesses in Victoria? Getting rewarded while you do it! ☕️

Residents can support local cafes, reduce waste and win prizes all at the same time this October as the City of Victoria’s reuse stamp card contest returns for its third year.

The campaign runs throughout October and encourages residents to bring a reusable cup when purchasing beverages at participating cafes throughout Victoria.

More than 35 local businesses are taking part, with prizes up for grabs including a custom bike from Recyclistas, spa passes from Destination Greater Victoria, gift cards from the Downtown Victoria Business Association, and various zero-waste prize packs.

To take part, residents can pick up the wallet-sized stamp card from a participating businessor from City Hall.

Each time you use a reusable cup at one of the contest locations during October, you’ll get a stamp, counting as one entry into the prize draw.

The more stamps you collect will increase the chances of winning, so make sure to keep those London Fogs coming!

Anyone looking toward Victoria’s harbour over the weekend may have noticed a towering new addition to the waterfront. ⛵️

The massive three-masted vessel is the ARM Cuauhtémoc, a Mexican Navy sail-training ship that arrived in Victoria on Saturday, September 12th as part of a months-long voyage through the North Pacific.

The ship, which measures approximately 297 feet long and 39 feet wide, is currently docked at the Canadian Coast Guard base in Victoria.

Its visit is part of the Mexican Navy’s “North Pacific 2026” training cruise, a 92-day journey covering approximately 9,812 nautical miles.

Nor. Coffee has been around since 2023, located on the northwest corner of Johnson Street and Quadra Avenue.

It was being run by Yan Huang, who was also an artist, graphic designer and Swedish coffee enthusiast. However, Huang wanted to pursue a new path and put the business up for sale.

Recently, on July 28th, new owners Ryan Bessett and Serena Burton bought the business and have taken it over.

The new owners have big plans for the space, and have already started implementing some small changes in an effort to make the space amenable to what is needed by their customers and community members.

The space features vaulted commercial ceilings and is large enough to accommodate around 50 people.

“We saw this space and we thought this has so much more potential than just a café,” said Burton.

Their goal in this endeavour is to connect with the community and garner an atmosphere of positivity in the space that goes beyond selling snacks and cups of coffee.

Families heading to Oak Bay Recreation Centre will be without two of the pool’s most popular attractions for the foreseeable future.

“Following a recent inspection, the two waterslides at Oak Bay Recreation Centre will be closed until further notice while additional assessment and inspection can be completed,” the District said in a notice posted September 8th.

The brief notice does not indicate what was discovered during the inspection or whether repairs will be required.

There is also no estimated reopening date. The District says the slides will remain closed while the additional assessment and inspection work is completed.

The closure appears to be limited to the waterslides, with the District continuing to list regular operating hours for the pool and the rest of the recreation centre.

🔥 Looking for a delicious way to support local this weekend?

Greater Victoria’s own Grizzly BBQ is firing up its smokers at Esquimalt Ribfest and taking on some of the biggest rib teams in Canada, but this one means a little more for the hometown crew.

Owned by brothers Oliver “Ollie” Briggs and Penner Briggs, Grizzly BBQ is deeply rooted on Vancouver Island. Their family has lived here for five generations, and their connection to Ribfest runs through years of family, rugby and community history.

The crew has also built quite the trophy case, winning Best Ribs at Comox Valley Ribfest four years in a row and sweeping Best Ribs, Best Sauce and People’s Choice at Kamloops this summer.

Now, there’s one title they would love to bring home, their first People’s Choice win at Esquimalt Ribfest. 🏆

Stop by the Grizzly rig at Bullen Park, grab some ribs and cast your free vote at the information booth beside the giant inflatable pig. 🐻🍖
