Our views from our camping trip this holiday weekend. We’ve always left town to find quiet places that are firework free. We’ve always had dogs that hated them. We didn’t take the chance this weekend. We found the quietest place we could and we succeeded. So we still have no idea of Leia cares about loud noises. by @victoriaabrand

Watch Leia’s transformation. From a sick rescue pup to a relaxed goofy girl. The first couple months were hard but look how far she’s come in 4 months. Leia has realized she’s loved and safe and trusts us more and more every day. I’m not saying she isn’t still very cautious of new things but she doesn’t bolt and hide in the backyard anymore. She’s hanging out in the house and you can see how she smiles and is loving her life. I never knew how challenging rescuing a former stray shelter dog could be but also how rewarding it is when you’ve shown them you will take care of them and the love they give you in return. šŸ„°ā¤ļø by @victoriaabrand

I had a wonderful day yesterday for Mother’s Day. Since our family never plans well, we didn’t do a big get together but I did get to spend some quality time hanging out with a couple of my kids doing the things we love to do. Whitney and I went birding and had a beautiful day outside. It was a perfect day watching moms do their thing. I bet they didn’t know it was their special day. by @victoriaabrand

We celebrated this sweet girls first birthday. It’s interesting having a dog for two months and she’s already a year old. She’s warming up and trusting us so much more. She absolutely loves treats, walks and toys. Her silliness is coming out when you watch her toss her toys in the air and play by herself. It has been difficult at times but she has truly captured our hearts! by @victoriaabrand

I want to be real here for a minute. As most of you know we rescued a puppy, our Princess Leia, from a shelter in California. All we knew was she was a stray brought in with another dog and had just been spayed. She had been in the shelter 12 days. We knew when we saw her that she was shut down. She was in the grass curled up in a ball. I looked at Darren and said to him, ā€œShe’s going to be a challenge.ā€ We were very naive. Her beginnings in our home started with pneumonia and mycoplasma. She was a sick puppy. She basically did nothing but sleep for two weeks. We’re finally seeing her real personality. We always knew there was a sweetheart in her. She loves to be brushed and wants gentle pets. She’s starting to play and get the zoomies. What is taking a little while to find out is she has trauma and frightens and shuts down easily. If she feels you are trying to correct her or raise your voice she’s done for the day. She will curl up and won’t come to us or take treats. We’re learning that a he needs time to decompress and feel safe and to learn to trust us. Too much too soon is too overwhelming. My point is most people have you think rescuing a puppy or dog from a shelter or unknown situation is so rosy and easy. Unfortunately, it’s not always that simple. Some dogs are very anxious and afraid. They can’t all be brought home and thrown into a busy life of taking them everywhere you go, stores, brew pubs, long hikes and dog parks. I think social media can be deceiving and can make people think if you rescue a dog, you will immediately change their life and they will be so happy to be in your life. That’s not always true! Some dogs come with a past that is unknown or sometimes very bad situations. Yes dogs are very forgiving and resilient but sometimes it’s not as quick and easy as social media may make you believe. We already are so in love with our sweet Leia. We will show her that she is safe and can trust us but it will take time and patience. She landed with us for a reason and we will show her how lucky she is to be with us. Adventures will happen and you can join us and watch her grow. Any suggestions for an Instagram name with Leia in it? by @victoriaabrand

Enjoyed a beautiful sunny week at the Oregon coast. I have a new hobby, rockhounding. We found some beautiful agates and other rocks I can’t identify yet. It’s a perfect way to relax and rejuvenate. by @victoriaabrand

Nine years ago this weekend we took a very long drive to Souther California to adopt Benham. We had no idea what kind of dog he was, I just knew from seeing his face online that he needed us. I did not expect to have him for what to me felt like a very short time. I do not regret any of it. I would do it again for the joy he gave us all the years he was with us. Some days I can watch his silly antics on my videos and other days it just makes me miss him so much. That’s the hard part about loving a dog. We are not guaranteed a long time with them. The best part is we are guaranteed unconditional love for the time we do share our lives with them. by @victoriaabrand
