Hallaca House, B&W / Color Film

Days before U.S. intervention in Venezuela, I started photographing the multi-day laborious tradition of making hallacas that my family returns to every Christmas. Food has always been a way for my family to bond and show affection and it’s during these times where I learn the most about my family both in the U.S. and in Venezuela. I’ve never felt particularly connected to this ritual, but photographing forced me to be present. When I wasn’t shooting images, I was washing and cutting plantain leaves, chopping and sorting vegetables, and listening to stories. In the kitchen I notice how intertwined politics are in it all, they shape who was forced to leave and how my family interacts with the world. It felt especially important to document this tradition in this current moment as a way to preserve what can’t be assimilated, extracted, or exiled. by @victoriapereda_
