POP - So short. So Fast.

I wanted to animate a piece of gum, but I can’t make a random animation, it needs to be a story instead. So, I built this animation around the idea of how fast life goes. It's not that I want to tell a story, but having one gives direction to the process. I'm always looking to animate something that behaves in a different way from my previous projects. And this was also an opportunity to work on a packaging animation.

I had to resist the instinct of making everything fast and snappy to create a reflexive mood. It makes it feel Balloon’s life shorter 😟.

I tried to use more childish colours at the beginning and end with a grey environment, but I'm not sure if the transition reads as intended 🤔.

This is the usual pipeline: Houdini → C4d → Ae.

I like the 16x9 version better here: vicv.co/pop

Despite the name, this is not a POP simulation, haah. (For the Houdini users)

THE WASTE WE LEAVE
I was going through my Dropbox, freeing up space, and I thought about all those tests, backup files, and WIPs we’ve produced and left there, just wasting space. I started thinking about all those pieces we don’t see that didn’t make it to the final cut, but are still there around as waste.

This is another Houdini exploration. This time, I used mainly Cloth and ShapeMatch constraints from Vellum.

🎧Also proud of the sound design.

Chocolate and Keyframes.
A day trying to be creative.

This is about anxiety, chocolate, and keyframes.
(🎻 And, the music is so good! 🎧)

1. Anxiety as a copilot 🥴.There are some days when frustration becomes anxiety. Frustration for not being able to get what I have in mind, or for not being able to control all the things on the screen. Have I set the goal too high for myself? Or it’s just a bad day? The problem is that we need to prove we are who we've said we are. That’s when anxiety arrives, fueled by all that coffee I thought would make me work better.
For sure, I’m not the only one on this. Right? right? 😬

2. Chocolate: 🍫Be ready when the opportunity calls.
Be ready when the opportunity calls. That's what motivates all my personal projects. It’s just about rehearsing. So, when Lindt or another brand (hopefully Lindt) calls me to create an animation, I’d feel ready to say, yes! Also, chocolate is my treatment for anxiety.

3. Keyframes, ⏳ hold keyframes.
I’ve been getting into too many simulations lately, but most of the time I’m hired to animate and not simulate. And, since I don't think I’d like to become a VFX animator, I tried to go right to the opposite end, using as many hold-keyframes or step-keyframes to create a stop-motion-y feeling.

Sometimes I like creating my own tools to make my 3D-motion-life easier and since it's already done, why not share it. So, To anyone who needs to know when the render of their sequences will be done, here's a tiny calculator that I used to have running on my local machine. I do this math almost every day, I thought maybe it's helpful to someone else.

To all my fellow animators and 3D designers, if you have ideas how to do this better, let me know. Or, what other tool like this one we need 🤔 by @vicver

📦 The Packaging: This is the last piece of this “russian doll” kind of simulation. I wanted to use this mainly as a packaging practice (If there is a brand that needs something like this 😉).

This is also Vellum Cloth, very stiff, zero stretchy. Here, I also simulate the wrap from flat into the folded version before the opening simulation. I don’t see how to model those triangular folds on the top without distorting the mesh 🤔.

I’m glad I switched from a too-serious approach to a more childish style. I also like how you can see the exterior of the packaging from inside.

2: The Metallic Wrap: Once I had the simulated gum, I used it to push open the wrap. This is also Vellum but very stiff to mimic a paper. This is my favourite part of this project. Modelling and animating something like this would take so long if it weren't simulated. Thanks to @horikawa.j for sharing the origami knowledge.

Also, first time I used the Anisotropy parameter in Redshift. I used it to create the pressed lettering on the wrap surface 🗜️.

A lot of people have written 'control' on the animation's comments. I wish I had more control over the simulation. There's s a not-small percentage of BRUTE FORCE here. Pushing and hiding some points to get what I wanted. I wonder if Pros, use brute force as well. I found myself wasting too much time tweaking things when faking it is also legit. At the end what the camera sees is what matters.

“What happens to the work we delete?” 🗑️

Victor Verdugo | The Waste We Leave

While clearing out his Dropbox, Victor Verdugo turned a simple question into a haunting visual: where does all the unused creative waste go?

The Waste We Leave is a personal Houdini exploration using Vellum’s Cloth and ShapeMatch constraints to simulate forgotten WIPs—tangled, floating, unresolved.

Rendered and lit in Cinema 4D, it transforms digital clutter into poetic motion.

A meditation on loss, memory, and the unseen detritus of our creative lives.

The last third: The Flip Simulation.

I thought this one would be the most difficult, but in the end, it was only micro-adjusting and re-simulating. Remembering all the attributes that play together is the tougher aspect, at least as a learner. This simulation was so fragile; changing some timing or value can break what I got, so keeping versions is key.

Vellum Simulation: Transferring attributes is the most important thing when controlling these simulations. (For me at least). And MOPs is always handy.
