Week before my birthday gift: Turquoise pendant in time for Cody Jinks

Capturing the Texas Rogue Raven spirit by @vidaclarkphotography

“The sky is changed!—and such a change! Oh night,
And storm, and darkness, ye are wondrous strong.”
— Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, Canto III by Lord Byron

Enjoying a natural light show in the sky over the mountains. by @vidaclarkphotography

“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive…”
— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book 8 (Gregory Hays translation)

Up since 5 a.m. watching a lightning show tear open the sky, early‑morning coffee warming my hands.

Somewhere beyond, the mountains are still asleep.

A light wind is blowing.

The morning is quiet.

Vestiges of the sun push through the clouds and a hush settles everywhere.

A new day is slowly beginning.

Monday doesn’t ease in — it stalks.

A raven‑shadow kind of morning, the kind that makes you sit with your appetite and decide whether you’re going to meet the day like a civilized human or something closer to the wild thing you actually are.

Jim Harrison once wrote, “The world is full of mostly invisible things, and there’s no way to get at them except to eat them.”

That’s the kind of line you carry into a morning like this — not as philosophy, but as permission.

Permission to want more.

Permission to taste what the world hides.

Permission to start the week with your teeth in something honest.

So here’s the offering: a pepper‑kissed egg that still remembers the skillet’s heat, citrus bright enough to cut through whatever yesterday left behind, avocado soft as a coastal breeze drifting too far inland, and meat draped in green sauce like it’s wearing its own weather.

A plate built for people who chase the invisible things — hunger, beauty, trouble, the next good story waiting just past the horizon.

A breakfast that doesn’t pretend. A Monday that doesn’t apologize. A life that stays a little feral on purpose.

John Muir fought for the same values that protect every aspect of our world.

We only have one Earth.

He warned that wild places disappear fast when profit enters the room, fragile ecosystems collapse when treated as scenery, and once wilderness is gone, it doesn’t come back.

His words echo through every canyon, hoodoo, mesa, and red‑rock ridge — especially now, when decisions from Washington have opened more land to development and extraction.

It’s a reminder that preservation isn’t guaranteed.

It’s a choice.

And every time the pen moves, the land feels it.

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.” — John Muir, Our National Parks, 1901

The mountains never get old.

They stand stubborn and honest, the kind of truth a country girl recognizes without needing to say a thing.

No polish. No pretending. Just rock, wind, and quiet that settles deeper than anything built from concrete.

There’s a kind of honesty in places like this — land that doesn’t ask for introductions, doesn’t care about shine, doesn’t need to be explained.

The world shows up raw, unfiltered, and worth meeting on its own terms.

John Muir spent his life walking wild places, listening to land most people never bothered to meet.

His wanderings helped spark Yosemite and Sequoia, and his words still remind us that wilderness isn’t decoration — it’s medicine, clarity, and a kind of truth that disappears the moment we stop protecting it.

Preserving these places isn’t about nostalgia.

It’s about keeping the world honest.

It’s about making sure future wanderers still have mountains that speak straight and skies that don’t need permission to shine.

Moon Between Two Horizons
By Vida | Texas Rogue Raven

Light breeze in the evening air
Feeling the desert breathe back at me,
warm and familiar
Crescent moon ahead
Assuring life is a steady tide,
even out here where no ocean roars

Salt still lingers in my memory,
Gulf winds stitched into my bones,
but the desert has its own way
of teaching a woman to stand tall.

Palm fronds whisper like old friends,
sky bruised in blues and ember gold,
and I walk between two worlds —
coastal heart,
desert spine —
carrying both like a quiet inheritance.

The moon hangs low,
a silver promise,
telling me I can belong
to more than one horizon at a time.

“Wilderness is a necessity.” — John Muir

There’s a quiet truth in that line — the kind you only hear when your boot hits warm rock and the world answers back.

Out here, the ground carries stories most folks never stop long enough to notice. The same people who can’t walk on these places without trying to own them are often the ones who forget that the best things in this world aren’t for sale.

I take photos to remind myself of what’s still here — the rugged, unrepeatable beauty that doesn’t need permission to exist.

Nature doesn’t shout for attention. It doesn’t beg to be valued. It just exists — rugged, stubborn, beautiful — until someone decides it’s worth more paved over than protected.

It simply shows up in its own wild way, hoping someone will care enough to see it before it’s gone.

Photography keeps me honest. It keeps me paying attention.

And maybe, if we pay attention long enough, we’ll remember that protecting the world isn’t a grand gesture — it’s a simple step, taken again and again, on ground that deserves better than being ignored.

Every frame is a reminder. Every step is a promise to look closer.

The beauty we stand on — the beauty we depend on — can’t be bought, polished, or replaced once it’s gone.

“Good food and good eating are about risk.” — Anthony Bourdain

Thursday mornings in the desert always feel like a quiet little crossroads for me — a place where my Texas Gulf coastal roots meet my Vietnamese blood and settle into something that tastes like home, even out here under this wide Southwestern sky.

I look at this plate — the avocado draped over warm eggs, the bright fruit shining like tiny coastal suns — and I feel all the layers of where I come from.

The dragon fruit hits first, that familiar Vietnamese sweetness I grew up loving.

The citrus reminds me of Gulf mornings, humid and soft.

The omelet with its desert‑green sauce feels like the Southwest reminding me I’m here now, building a life in a place that asks you to be a little tougher, a little braver.

It’s a blend only someone like me could understand — coastal cowgirl grit, desert stillness, and the quiet inheritance of Vietnamese kitchens where flavor is a language and breakfast is an act of care.

Bourdain talked about risk, but I think he meant truth — the courage to taste your life exactly as it is.

This morning plate is exactly that. A little wild. A little tender. A little of everywhere I’ve been and everything I am.

From food on the table to bands onstage, from desert trails to the quiet patience of birds, I chase the world with my camera and my own two eyes.

Every frame is a challenge to see differently, to slow down, to notice what most folks walk past.

This journey keeps me curious, keeps me grounded, and keeps me creating.

My 2nd dust storm. The first one was apparently classified as a Cat 3. And I thought categories were only reserved for the Texas Gulf Coast hurricanes.

What a way to help a Texas Coastal Cowgirl feel at home.

Be Safe. Stay indoors.
