من أجلك أدمر السماء، من أجلك أهدم الجحيم
“For you I’ll destroy the sky, for you I’ll tear down hell”

I painted the tension between.

Rosalía's song "La Yugular" honors the 8th-century Sufi saint Rabia al-Adawiyya. The song is inspired by her philosophy of pure, selfless devotion to God, a concept Rosalía explores by weaving sacred themes into her music.
Rabia al-Adawiyya: A female Sufi mystic known for her principle of loving God for His own sake, rather than out of fear of hell or desire for paradise.

Known for founding the doctrine of divine love, Rabia is remembered for her guiding principle: to love Allah for His own sake, rather than out of fear or desire for reward. To embody this philosophy, she carried fire and water, symbolically seeking to destroy both Hell and Heaven so that devotion would come from pure and selfless love.

Singing in Arabic, which Rosalía said was inspired by Rabia, she delivers in the chorus: “من أجلك أدمَّر السماء، من أجلك أهدم الجحيم، فلا وعود ولا وعيد,” translating to: “For you, I would destroy the heavens, for you, I would demolish hell, without promises and without threats.

Like Rabia, Rosalía’s chorus expresses her deep, unconditional devotion to God, moving beyond transactional faith while linking flamenco’s Andalusian roots with Sufi spiritual traditions.

When @rosalia.vt sings these words in Arabic - an outsider’s language - she’s honoring every woman who was told to be quiet, to be small, to choose between love and freedom, to destroy herself to fit into their boxes.

Art speaks to art across centuries. Rebellion echoes.

What happens when a culture becomes an aesthetic?

The symbols are easy to consume.
The deeper layers are harder.
We keep the patterns, the colours, the calligraphy, the mythology.

But what happens to the politics, the history, the contradictions, the ecology, the memory and the people behind them?

That’s the part I’m interested in.

I don’t want to make Arab art that is simply recognizable. I want to make work that carries the complexity of where it comes from.

Arab identity is complicated, contradictory, beautiful, painful, alive.

And that’s exactly what I want to paint.
What gets lost when culture is reduced to visual language?

Tag an artist whose work refuses to flatten their culture into an aesthetic.

There is the Lebanon I can experience while I’m there… and Lebanon that I carry with me while I’m away, it’s made of memory, nostalgia and longing.

I feel I carry that longing for better days from my mother.

The feeling that you get from loving Lebanon is different than any other love. It slaps you back 💯 times and you still love it. It’s not just a place, or a food or a person or a view. It’s enchanting and magical, and you will never forget it’s vibe. Lebanon is an emotion and that is its curse.

Goodbyes never get easier they only grow heavier… and the feeling that every time passes by and nothing stays like the memory I carry with me.

Hanging on to the love ❤️ hanging on to the light we carry.
