🇧🇬 Varna, Bulgaria 📷

I recently had the opportunity to visit Bulgaria to celebrate the wedding of two wonderful friends. Varna was beautiful, and I really enjoyed exploring the city with my camera.

A few moments from the trip.

🗿 Raving Madness and Melancholy Madness — Two faces of 17th-century psychiatry.

These powerful sculptures once stood at the gates of Bethlem Hospital (or “Bedlam”) — the world’s oldest psychiatric institution. Sculpted in 1676 by Caius Gabriel Cibber, they embody two historical views of mental illness: one violent and chaotic, the other withdrawn and sorrowful.

Look closely at their faces:
😠 Wild-eyed frenzy, mouth agape, bound in chains.
😞 Downcast gaze, slumped posture, lost in despair.

Now preserved at @bethlem_museum
