Celebrated poet, filmmaker, and Poet Laureate Emeritus of Dublin, California, James Morehead, has unveiled his Autumn 2026 reading and event tour. Morehead’s multi-city circuit includes independent bookstores, cultural spaces, and marquee literary venues across Northern California, Nevada, and Toronto (Canada).

“Growing up on the East Coast, before moving west to the San Francisco Bay Area, autumn has always been my favorite time of year,” said Morehead. “The crisp turn in the weather creates the ideal setting for live poetry readings that support local independent bookstores and celebrate the literary community.”

I'm excited to be partnering on this tour with wonderful local bookstores including @aseatatthetablebooks (Elk Grove, CA) and @hollowandquill (Reno, NV), Arts organizations including @decenteredarts, @litquake, @saintjosephsartsfoundation, and the @gatherpoets Poetry Community.

James Morehead (Poet Laureate Emeritus - Dublin, CA) performs "She is San Francisco" and "tethered" at the Gather Poetry Show (Overflow Coffee - Chicago, IL).

This was my first time performing from memory (butterflies!) No shortcuts to memorizing poetry, at least not for me, which is why I've waited so long to try performing from memory!

James is host of the Viewless Wings Poetry Podcast, and has published several poetry collections including "The Plague Doctor". “tethered” was transformed into an award-winning animated short film, “Twilight in the Sculpture Forest” won Best Documentary at the Los Angeles Poetry Film Festival, and “gallery” was set to music for baritone and piano. He has been published in the Ignatian, Beyond Words, Citron Review, Ekphrastic Review, Loud Coffee Press, Havik, and others. James has performed in Patagonia's Poet Laureate Celebration, NPR’s Poetically Yours, and as Guest Poet at the 20th Annual Haiku Festival.

Grateful and thrilled to share that "Welcome to the Tenderloin" has won Best Short Documentary at the 2026 San Francisco Frozen Film Festival! 🏆🎬

My film is a cinematic sestina filmed at and around the Tenderloin Museum and celebrates the rich, complex, and resilient mosaic of San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. From suffragette Maud Younger to Allen Ginsberg, Janis Joplin, and Monica Helms, the Tenderloin has an incredible history of art, activism, and community.

A huge thank you to director/editor Paul Ghusar, DP Koby Park, composer Dustin Ransom, Ian Morehead, and the entire SF Frozen Film Festival team for this honor!

My poem (see below) "buttons, buttons, buttons!" appears in the Gather Anthology 2026. My copy arrived today (so beautifully designed!) and I'll be performing at the launch events in Toronto and San Francisco. The poem was inspired by Beau McCall's Buttons On! exhibit at the Museum of Craft & Design (San Francisco).

buttons, buttons, buttons!

the Kool-Aid Man with a skull-eyed smirk
pours his black-cherry bubbles
into a doily-framed
mason jar

plastic scarlet
splatters a hangover stain
from a wine bottle
tipped and ever-flowing

a corset
of burnished baubles
squeezes a decapitated
dress form

mail of pierced medallions
threaded through gold wire
armors the lava-gray
denim caftan

a crucifix looms
for learning your letters
AbCdEFU
trapped in a hardwood chairdesk

the lady in red
outlined in mother-of-pearl
washes away the scent of rhinestones
in a crimson-enameled iron tub

we enter and exit
past rows of more mason jars
each sealed full with untethered tokens
discarded

"layers of paint cover cheeks, nose, neck,
a tapered brush frames my eyes,
fierce, fast strokes fill in my clothes..."

from the poem "alexa calls to me" included in my latest collection "The Plague Doctor" (link in bio) Swipe to read the full poem. 🖤

An ekphrastic tribute to the living installation art of Alexa Meade who transforms the human body through acrylic brushstrokes until boundary dissolves, reality collapses into canvas, and subject becomes The Painted Man. 🎨🖌️📸

Photos of me at Wonderland Dreams, an immersive art exhibit by @alexameadeart. She took over a former Best Buy on Fifth Avenue, NYC and transformed the 26,000 sq ft space into a magical 2D/3D painted world, complete with over 30 art installations.

"First you were concealed in bark
while over your shoulder
the Golden Gate spit embers,
ignited by midsummer sun"

A lyric journey tracing apparitions across San Francisco, from midsummer embers over the Golden Gate to wild horses galloping through cirrus clouds and tides carving sea glass. 🌉☕☁️

Exquisite and deadly, these steel siblings
were flame-forged, cooled, then beaten with hammers
until the blades were sharp and shimmering.

Originally published in Listen & Be Heard.

Written after a display of Sumatran daggers (circa 1600–1950) at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. 🗡️✨🏛️
