Quietly celebrating one year disease free. I had my fourth separate surgery but 6th surgery out of 7 last year to remove both breasts and insert tissue expanders to stretch the skin for 12 weeks and make room/a pocket for implants to then be swapped in last September. The lumpectomies I had before seemed easier and this one was a mental hurdle. The thought of “losing” them seemed so much worse than just taking part of my breasts. At this point a plastic surgeon would be partnering with the breast surgeon to complete the surgery, and during my consult I was having a tough time with it and luckily had a very kind plastic surgeon that took the time to sit with me and explain the reasons why it was necessary. I explained to the plastic surgeon that my mind knew it was the necessary thing to do but my heart was still catching up. Both he and the nurse took extra time talking to me about what to expect and I walked out 100% comfortable in moving forward. And a year later, I have no regrets in taking a step forward in removing my breasts and giving me the best chance to extend my life.

Thank you to Chris, my friends and family and my work team, who have supported me and prayed for me during this journey. I have a big team behind me praying for me.

This was somewhat of a surprise for me to get this diagnosis with no immediate family history. Throughout testing and treatment, I kept things under wrap while I figured out how to deal with and maneuver through everything both mentally and physically, so if you didn’t know, sorry!!

My testing and many doctors appointments started in March-May and surgeries in May/June/September…5 surgeries in totalI feel like an expert in recovery now. I am lucky to have an amazing PA who referred me to an amazing medical team of oncologists, surgeons, PAs and nurses who are taking great care of me. I may have a few more reconstructive surgeries to complete and will have preventative medication to take for 5-10 years.

I post this now because a lot of my friends and family are in the age range that screening starts. Screening does not pick up everything though. About 50% of women have dense breast tissue, meaning basically more connective tissue vs fatty tissue and it makes it harder for mammograms to detect abnormalities. Women with dense breast tissue are 4-5 times more likely to get breast cancer. So when you get your mammogram, ask if you have what’s considered dense breast tissue so you are aware of your risks. I had mammograms, ultrasounds and MRIs and the surgeon still found additional DCIS during surgery in an area that hadn’t shown up on any of the scans.

The Snake River in Grand Teton National Park…my version in the first slide vs Ansel Adam’s in the second slide. You can see the way the landscape has changed around the river and the trees have grown in. Not nearly as dramatic now but the view is still pretty spectacular with the trees changing color.

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. That’s one person every two minutes in the US. 85% of those who are diagnosed had no family history of breast cancer. The two most common risk factors for getting breast cancer are being female and getting older. Early detection is key. 💕 from a breast cancer survivor
