A Roman mosaic floor nearly 1,800 years old at the Dorset Museum & Art Gallery.

Created in the 3rd–4th century AD, when Dorchester was the Roman town of Durnovaria, it’s made from thousands of tiny stone tiles called tesserae.

The geometric patterns and braided borders are typical of Roman design — careful craftsmanship that has survived almost two millennia.

What we now admire in a museum was once simply a floor people walked across every day in Roman Britain.

Standing inside the Victorian Hall at the Dorset Museum & Art Gallery.

Sometimes history doesn’t sit in separate rooms.
Sometimes it stands quietly above and below you at the same time.

This hall in the Dorset Museum & Art Gallery was built in the 1880s, with elegant iron arches and galleries typical of Victorian confidence and craftsmanship.

But beneath your feet lies something much older — a Roman mosaic floor laid nearly 1,800 years ago, when Dorchester was the Roman town of Durnovaria.

Two eras.
Two visions of skill and design.
One shared human instinct: to create something that lasts.

Standing here, it’s hard not to wonder how many generations have walked across this pattern — and how many more will.

The Piece Hall, Halifax, Yorkshire 🇬🇧

Opened in 1779, The Piece Hall was built for local handloom weavers and merchants to sell their “pieces” of cloth — around 30 yards of woven wool.

It housed 315 trading rooms around a vast central courtyard, offering a secure and prestigious space for commerce during Halifax’s textile boom.

Today, it stands as the world’s only remaining Georgian cloth hall, a symbol of the town’s creativity and ambition.

Restored and reimagined, The Piece Hall is now home to independent shops, cafés, exhibitions, and open-air events, connecting past and present in the heart of Halifax.

A place where history still breathes — and craft, commerce, and community meet.

I was honoured to be present at “A Front for Something”’s event yesterday morning when Rob received the “Kenny Award for Best Breakfast in Didsbury”.

I’d like to congratulate Rob on this prestigious award, I’m sure it’s not the first and it certainly won’t be Rob’s last. It’s very well deserved.

My apologies to both Rob and Kenny. In my excitement, I held the camera incorrectly. Had I gone for landscape, I’d have got the name and trophy in full. Better luck next time, perhaps?

In closing, however, I’d urge you all to rush along to Rob’s “A Front for Something” where you can enjoy a great breakfast at an affordable price and see the full version of the trophy on display.
