Nobody warns you about Stockholm’s hills. You arrive thinking of canals and museums, and end up getting to know the city through your legs: you climb one street, turn a corner, find an even steeper one, and when you finally look back, you understand why it was worth it.

There’s a moment in Stockholm when the city changes its mood. The sky deepens, the sails strung between the buildings glow softly overhead, and the lamps flicker on one by one along the street. Down below, life carries on at its own easy pace: friends catching up after work, someone wandering home the long way round, a few of us simply stopping to look up. This is Strandvägen, one of Stockholm’s best-known waterfront streets, seen from across Nybroviken. The buildings date from around 1900, when the street was built as the city’s grand boulevard toward Djurgården. Today the quay is a hub for sightseeing boats and archipelago traffic, and a walk along it takes you from Nybroplan to Djurgårdsbron in about 20 minutes.
