Just had to share a still of this wonderful guys. The achilles is the king of tangs…fight me 😂 Furthermore they are, contrary to popular belief, actually fairly easy to get established provided that some basic needs are being met. No feature Friday today unfortunately. Instead it’s filefish Friday haha! My little mandarin. I’ve found that dialing in flow on a 200 cm peninsula is no joke! Part 2 of the 1000L build is live on YouTube, and we are diving deep into overcoming water inertia and finding the sweet spot for a big bare-bottom display. Initially, I wanted to keep the peninsula end completely clean with zero visible pumps. But physics had other plans—water inertia is real, and pushing a pulse across a 2-meter span without creating a dead zone took some trial and error. Here is what I finally settled on: The Heavy Lifters: Dual MP60s and three MP40s handling the main flow. The Peninsula Solution: Low-profile Orbit 4’s and a MP40 on the viewing end to tackle the dead spots without ruining the aesthetic. #VikingReefing #ReefTank #SaltwaterAquarium #ReefKeeping #SPSCorals AquariumHobby MarineTank Corals ReefAddict by @viking_reefing
Have you ever tried bubble scrubbing? It’s an old school technique that seems to have been forgotten by a lot of younger reefers. Every week or two, I take a powerhead or turkey baster to the aquascape to blast loose all the settled detritus. But blowing it off is only step one—a lot of that fine particulate just ends up settling right back down into tight crevices or under dense SPS bases. That’s where bubble scrubbing comes in: Captures suspended waste: the bubbles gives all that floating detritus something to bind to, keeping it suspended instead of letting it resettle. Brings it up to be filtered out: The upward air lift sweeps everything directly into the overflow so mechanical filtration and skimmer can actually pull it out before it breaks down into phosphate and nitrate. If you combine it with coral snow it’s even more effective! In terms of larger fish I feel fairly happy with the crew that I got (unless someone has a spare bandit angel or tinkeri butterfly) and I will only be adding smaller fish moving forward. Any suggestions? One thing I want to add is some more anthias. I’m thinking about 10 or so. Talk about a swarm of fish 🤣 In unrelated news: if you have a bare bottom scrape that dang thing. Nothing beats sand in terms of aesthetics but a bottom pane covered in algea is an eyesore. Something I realize every month when I scrape mine haha. A long metal scraper is a reefers best friend! I try to clean of the bottom from algae about once a month as it looks so much cleaner. Scraping the back wall should be mandatory for all reefers 😜 a clean back wall really makes your fish and corals pop and gives the tank a much crisper look! Happy Friday everyone! Angel formula has been one of my staples for a long time. I find that feeding this stuff really helps in keeping things like angels, moorish idols, butterfly fish and others healthy long term as it contains sponge. One of the staples of their diet. Give it a go! I constantly hear that feeding heavy is stupid and will result in nutrients exploding. If that’s the case your filtration isn’t good enough. I feed this amount of frozen every evening in addition to 4 feedings of flakes and pellets a day. If anything I need to feed more as my po4 has gone from 0.05 to about 0.025 over a couple of weeks. It’s hardly ever a nutrient import problem but rather an export problem! For some reason my po4 has been plummeting over the last few weeks which gives me a license to feed even more 😅 One interesting development in the world of science is that po4, unless very high…over 0.1 or so, isn’t all that bad but nitrate is harmful for corals, even in low concentrations. Completely the reverse of what’s been understood for a long time. It would seem that having SOME po4 (0.04-0.1) and zero nitrates is something to strive for. With the caveat that there needs to be a nitrogen source present in the form of ammonia and urea. Very interesting and something I think I’ll be giving a shot. I’m thinking that a decent way would be to do carbon dosing to bring down nitrates to near zero in conjunction whilst dosing an ammonia/urea mix. I’ve previously had great results with dosing ammonia but I still kept my nitrates at around 5-10 when I was doing that. Thoughts?
