I’ve been working on something special lately. Combining my love for club music with the instrumentation of R&B and soul has led to the development of a live set that I’m super excited about.
In a world where AI and online experiences are becoming more dominant, I’m drawn to what makes us human: culture, creativity, and imperfection. I explore creativity through music and across cultures.
My performances grow from fascination and unconventional ways of thinking, bringing new ideas to light through electronic rhythms, soulful vocals, and layered harmonies. My journey isn’t about perfection or optimization, but about expansion, curiosity, and understanding. by @vilainmusic

Yardbird presents: Vilain Live! At our upcoming Yardbird event at MONO, Rotterdam artist and producer @vilainmusic premieres the first chapter of a three-part live series. An evolving club-focused live project rooted in electronic soul, R&B and dance music.

The project explores the space between electronic dance music, soulful textures and R&B-influenced instrumentation, built for the club, yet shaped by live instrumentation and soulful expression.

The first chapter unfolds at MONO on February 20. Witness the magic and join us on the dancefloor

1. I’ve been prepping over the last couple of weeks for my shows at @yardbird_ and @eendrachtfestival , and I want to give you a little snippet of those preparations. In this post, ɪ’ʟʟ ᴅɪᴠᴇ ɪɴᴛᴏ ᴛʜᴇ ꜱᴇᴛʟɪꜱᴛ and tell you a little bit more ᴀʙᴏᴜᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ᴅʀᴜᴍꜱ!

2. But before we dive in, SO/ to @woe.stijn for this iconic picture. ᴄᴀɴ ʏᴏᴜ ꜱᴘᴏᴛ ᴍᴇ ᴏɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘᴏꜱᴛᴇʀ?

3. ＴＨＥＳＥＴＵＰ．For the upcoming set, you can expect ᴀ ʙʟᴇɴᴅ (👀) ᴏꜰ ᴀᴄᴏᴜꜱᴛɪᴄ ᴅʀᴜᴍꜱ, ꜱᴀᴍᴘʟᴇʀꜱ (ᴍᴏʀᴇ ᴏɴ ᴛʜɪꜱ ʟᴀᴛᴇʀ), ᴀɴᴅ ᴅɪꜰꜰᴇʀᴇɴᴛ ᴋᴇʏꜱ ᴀɴᴅ ꜱʏɴᴛʜᴇꜱɪᴢᴇʀꜱ. In my studio, I use an electronic drum kit so that I’m able to record sound without mics (and without my neighbors hating me). This allows me to listen to my sets, analyze them, and adapt them.

４．ＴＨＩＳＩＳＭＹＢＡＢＹ. aka my acoustic drum kit. My entire kit is pitched relatively high ᴛᴏ ᴍɪᴍɪᴄ ᴛʜᴇ ꜱᴏᴜɴᴅ ᴏꜰ ᴊᴜɴɢʟᴇ ᴅʀᴜᴍ ʙʀᴇᴀᴋꜱ. I chose this tuning because it best fits my UK garage-driven sound, making the drums ʀᴇᴀʟʟʏ ᴘᴜɴᴄʜʏ ᴀɴᴅ ꜱʜᴏʀᴛ.
The proportions of an electronic drum kit differ from an acoustic one. I regularly alternate between the two to train my brain to adapt to different setups. While the electronic kit allows for an ᴇꜰꜰɪᴄɪᴇɴᴛ ᴄʀᴇᴀᴛɪᴠᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴄᴇꜱꜱ, the acoustic kit offers ᴀ ᴍᴏʀᴇ ɴᴜᴀɴᴄᴇᴅ ꜱᴏᴜɴᴅ ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴇᴠᴇʀʏ ʜɪᴛ and translates better in a live performance.

５．ＳＮＥＡＫＰＥＥＫＩＮＴＯＭＹＳＥＴ. I like to write out my entire set and all my ideas on paper. I feel like it gets the creativity flowing and inspires new elements I can add to my shows. Try it out yourself! ᴡʀɪᴛɪɴɢ ᴏɴ ᴘᴀᴘᴇʀ ᴛʀɪɢɢᴇʀꜱ ᴀ ʙᴇᴛᴛᴇʀ ᴄᴏɢɴɪᴛɪᴠᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴄᴇꜱꜱ and helps you analyze things more clearly.

６．ＴＡＰＥ．If you came to my last performances, you might have seen tape on my drum kit. This was ɴᴏᴛ ᴛᴏ ꜰɪx ᴀɴʏ ʜᴏʟᴇꜱ I made, but to dull and shorten up the sound even more. When producing UK garage, you often shorten up the drums by ᴄᴜᴛᴛɪɴɢ ᴏꜰꜰ ᴛʜᴇ ꜱᴜꜱᴛᴀɪɴ. To mimic this effect in my live sets, I play around with different techniques, such as adding tape to my snare. This makes the sound shorter and punchier. by @vilainmusic

On the 𝟏𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 I will be performing at 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 for @eendrachtfestival and on the 𝟏𝟖𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 I will be bringing the good vibes to @keilecafe for @yardbird_ .

Eyo we BACK! The last show was a fking banger. I focused on my technical skills (specifically drumming) while also being in the moment and enjoying every aspect of the show. It really clocked to me how important (and how much more fun) it is to connect with everyone in the room and be part of the dance floor.
We are continuing this vibe to my next set on the 8th of May @clubofbird !! We are gonna go crazy at @getagrip.events with a Hybrid DJ set with live drums. I have been preparing this for the past couple of weeks and will be taking you guys along in the upcoming weeks.
For now some materials that have inspired lately...

1. Last set at @mono_rotterdam going wild on the sampler
2. My biggest groupie @thomasvilain is allowed my whole rider.
3. @sergioferreirartm ‘s lecture on post-punk and garage rock really shifted something for me. I love stepping outside my usual sound, and this reminded me how powerful simplicity can be. Those raw, minimal sounds hold your attention because so much is happening within them. Take-away: exploring more, adding less.
4. The @fuckfugazii anniversary was unreal, especially with @whatszep playing. The crowd here was fully present yet immersed in the experience. Turning the whole space into something alive. That kind of audience changes how you experience music.

𝙃𝙤𝙡𝙮 𝙁𝙪𝙘𝙠 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖 𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙠𝙚𝙣𝙙 !! I first want to thank everyone for 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛𝙛 !!

During my show I was able to experiment with a variety of elements, some of them went fk good others a bit less haha but regardless of the results I’m super happy and proud. I enjoyed the entire experience and gained a clear sense of how I will further develop my show and what I need to work on in the upcoming weeks (more on this later !). 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙞𝙨 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙜𝙪𝙮𝙨! Now I’m fired up to grind even harder and make the next one hit with even more energy!

1. I want to give a special thanks to @yardbird_ team and everyone that helped bring this show to life. I could not have done it without your support and assistance!
2. I got my first PR package SO/ to @jagermeisternl love the support !! (Am I an influencer now?!)
3. What is a Vilain show without vodka dubbelfris on the rider ?! + Love to have ‘Live’ added to my name
4. Probably my favorite part of the show. I have done it over a 1000 times but its still soo good! This is part of the first song of my set and my hands were shaking when I was grabbing the drumsticks but as soon as I hit the hihat the tension was gone and I was ready to deliver the sickest show ever !!
5. A snippet of the atmosphere of that night (and the exact moment it hit me: holy shit this is real, im really up here performing)
6. After the show I had so much adrenaline that we were all unable to sleep... 𝙃𝙖𝙡𝙛 𝙖 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙖𝙜𝙤 𝙄 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙤𝙪𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙨𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙧 𝙙𝙧𝙪𝙢 𝙠𝙞𝙩, so much has happened since then and 𝙄 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙙 𝙢𝙮 𝙖𝙨𝙨 𝙤𝙛𝙛 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙙𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙖 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮. @madelief.bouter en @lies.mf joined in the post-show ritual in which we discussed the process of these last couple of months and every juicy detail of that night

3. I’m super excited and nervous at the same time hahah so I have been practicing 24/7 to make sure I can do this set in my sleep !

6. I went to @denieuwelichting nieuwjaarsborrel at @litterboxrtm to see @mainonthegram perform in @jelmer.noordeman new design. Its so sick to see people’s creativity combined and to see @mainonthegram perform. Settings like these just motivate me even more to perform live and challenge myself.
7. We made an entire set in our living room only for me to figure out that it wasn’t going to work because of technical error on my side ;-( buuttt this actually helped to fix the routing between my instruments for Friday so let’s call it blessing in disguise
