We are finally getting a new roof! ✨

Last winter a tree fell on our roof and broke too many tiles to match. We love the look of the clay tiles but sadly they didn’t age well. So we’re trying to decide which color to go with for our new metal roof!

Villa gardens are looking quite spectacular after all the rain. Irises, daffodils and hyacinths are having their moments.
We are adding more flowers to the gardens so something is always blooming all through the summer and fall!
Next up: sunflowers, dahlias, zinnias, poppies, and more!

One of the recent guests at the Villa came here to open the Amador county branch of RailsExplorers! ✨

If you’ve never done something like this, I highly recommend it. The experience made us all feel giddy, and we enjoyed seeing the landscape from a different perspective. The day seemed overcast, but when we got out there, we realized that the clouds were making this dramatic formation overhead. Clouds & cows 😍 we even got a distant view of Preston Castle from the turnaround!

It’s gentle movement, not really exercise. The bikes have a battery assist so you’re just spinning. It’s 4 miles out, then you stop for a 20 minute break while they turn the cars around for you. There are lounge chairs & picnic tables set up, so we brought a few things to nosh on while there 🥪🍪

Our 4th bedroom finally opened up, now that the extremely heavy billiards table that used to live there has finally been moved downstairs to the old restaurant.

Coming soon: Villa games night!

Billiards, board games, pizza ✨🍕🎲

Recently we had a very sweet guest who stayed at the villa with her family. We found out later she is the niece of a friend! The world, although vast, is so small at times.

She told her aunt she loved my blueberry coffee cake ✨

It makes me so happy to hear this kind of candid, unsolicited feedback. It was also unexpected!

My style of baking could be described as wholesome & less sweet with French undertones.

I often cut the sugar called for in half. I also use farm fresh eggs, homemade buttermilk, organic & often stone-milled flours and unrefined sugars. It still feels decadent to me, but I wonder how it translates for different palates. My aim is to create food that tastes good & feels nourishing for the body while having lower impact on the planet.

For our breakfast buffet I usually make a trio of baked goods that includes fresh sourdough bread or focaccia, mini-quiches, and a sweet thing. This has been either mini banana Bundt cakes, cinnamon rolls & coffee cake.

Everything gets served buffet-style in the villa dining area. People seem to really like breakfast at the villa! We’ve also set up an espresso & tea bar with pour-over coffee & decadent loose-leaf teas.

At first I wanted to offer something simple that I could master. Now I’m wondering about adding different things to the menu, such as:

1. Waffle bar
2. Pop-overs
3. Croissants

Thoughts? Which item would you be delighted to find on your breakfast table?

We’ve been making some improvements to our outdoor space 🌸🌷🌻

The yellow rose that blooms profusely is, unfortunately, the preferred snacking stop for a local doe. She hasn’t killed the bush, but every time it blooms she eats the flower 😅

So I’ve been adding more flowers that she doesn’t seem as excited about. Also more culinary herbs. Deer are repelled by mint, rosemary, lemon verbena and other strong scents. These also make tasty additions to ice water in the summertime. Herbed ice water is a new addition to our breakfast buffet setup.

Now that mosquito season is over in most of NorCal, our patio is the best place to lounge on a warm summer afternoon.

It gets a nice breeze so it’s perfect, even on hot days. Inside the villa is still chilly, even when it’s hot outside.

We don’t use the AC much. No need! It stays cool inside because of the thick adobe walls. Outside it’s always shady and breezy.

This little circular daybed pulls apart to make four seats. It is the perfect spot for a long conversation or a nap. New solar mood lighting and the misters, we’re creating some vibes ✨

Dark chocolate cupcakes made with farm fresh eggs, coconut oil, and organic Volupta cacao. Frosting is chocolate buttercream. Didn’t have my piping nozzle so I improvised. The result is a bit like a poop emoji 😂

Volupta is a bit pricy. As a chocolate lover I won’t use any other cacao in my baked goods! It’s free trade & organic. And once you’ve tasted it no other chocolate compares.

Focaccia with rosemary, onion and pecorino. So simple & so good. Using goats milk whey in place of water gives it an extra boost of umami flavor & a ton of protein 💪

It’s a popular breakfast staple for our guests !

Hidden art ✨
On my first trip to Europe I visited a sculpture garden outside Amsterdam. It was so fun to walk around and casually stumble upon art. This face perched on the mantle was Colin’s touch and I experienced a similar joy at finding it here.

A friend recently suggested it would be nice to have more table seating in the living room. I agreed!

Found this neat old table, repainted it & polished it. Then found these mid-century chairs. They were nice but dusty. So I polished them up & changed out the fabric on the seats.

Could’ve sworn there were 4 of them but that might feel a bit crowded there anyway. Feeling good about the end result. It invites people to sit and chat over a meal.

We’ll serve food for our guests in the old restaurant. There is a ton of seating and a little bar that’s perfect for tasting flights of wine or making matcha lattes. But this is a good place to munch, convene and maybe even plan a day of outings.

There’s so much fun stuff to do here. Some of my favorites include walking around downtown Sutter Creek with my dogs, tastings at wineries, hiking, swimming in mountain lakes, rock climbing, mountain biking, bike touring, skiing, and shuffling through the many antique stores searching for hidden gems. When I have a rare entire free day, it’s sometimes hard to choose! Excited to be a host and tour guide for one of my favorite places in the world ✨
