I’m very sad to hear that my old friend Dwight Roberts has passed away.

I met Dwight when I first got into the special effects business around 1990. He was building the mechanical components for some of the Critters, and even back then I remember being blown away by what he could do.

Dwight was one of the most skilled mechanics and effects artists I ever knew. He had this incredible ability to look at something complicated, dive into it, figure it out, and make it work. And when Dwight built something, he overbuilt it. It was built to last. Things he made decades ago are still working today.

Years later, I finally had the honor of hiring Dwight to work with me on a television show. He and his son-in-law created some incredible animatronics for us—and those animatronics are still working to this day. He also built the walk-in special effects oven in my shop nearly 20 years ago. It’s still running.

But there was so much more to Dwight than his talent.

He was a true family man who loved his wife, his daughters, and his grandson. He loved his horses, his dogs, and being close to nature. He was just a great character and a good friend, and I learned so much from him over the years.

Dwight was a brilliant man, a great father, an incredibly talented effects artist, and someone who could do almost anything he put his mind to.

He could make the impossible possible through sheer ingenuity and a love for his craft.

I’m going to miss you, Dwight. I feel very fortunate that our paths crossed all those years ago and that I got to call you my friend.

Last Thursday, I lost my beautiful, wonderful sister, Shirley.

It breaks my heart knowing I won’t hear her laugh again. She was a true free spirit a wild soul who always lived life on her own terms. She never let anyone tell her how to live, and she embraced every day with her own unique fire.

After our mom passed away, I know that loss weighed heavily on her. I take comfort in believing they’re together again now.

What hurts most is knowing there won’t be more days, more conversations, or more memories to make with her. My heart also aches for her children, who loved their mom so deeply. Their lives, like mine, will be forever changed by this loss.

There was truly no one quite like Shirley. I don’t think they’ll ever make another person like her. She left all of us with something priceless not possessions, but an example of living authentically, loving fiercely, and never being afraid to be exactly who you are.

I will miss you more than words can say, my loving sister. Thank you for every laugh, every lesson, and every memory.

Rest in peace, Shirley. Give Mom a hug for me. Until we meet again. ❤️ by @villalobosstudios

I’ve known Tim on and off since childhood, all the way up until now. I was always envious of his talent and his pure love for the craft.

If you knew Tim, you knew he was a great guy to hang out with, but also a deeply passionate and sometimes tortured soul. Life seemed to hit him a little harder than most. We both loved creature gore, ’50s monsters, and all the weird, wonderful parts of this business.

I loved Tim because he could talk shit about people without ever making it feel mean. At his heart, he really did love everyone in this industry, and he enjoyed all the strange, fun personalities we’ve worked with over the years.

I ended up helping him out during the last few years, and I now have quite a bit of his stuff, which makes me sad because I always thought we’d somehow get it back to him. In this picture, he’s using a machine that was made for him — one I ended up with. It’s for painting eyeballs so they can both rotate simultaneously. I feel like I have to use it now, to honor him.

Rest in peace, Tim Gore. Seeing everyone post pictures and memories makes it clear how deeply he’ll be missed and how much everybody loved that guy. We should all plan a toast for him at some point.

His body of work was appreciated by so many, and still is to this day.

@bryanwynia one of the coolest creature designers I’ve ever had the privilege of working with I think this was for some Demon show that we worked on called “Await The Dawn” I had high hopes for this movie. I still have not seen it yet because of the budget I wasn’t able to really create the Demon to look like this. I’ll try and find some more designs until then enjoy these. by @villalobosstudios

It’s happening!! Designing new and crazier pizza monsters with @mikeyrots. We’re moving into feature films and getting ready to blow your minds with the biggest practical FX movie since the 80’s! We’ll be pulling in the heaviest of heavies for this one. An all star Special Makeup Effects artists cast. This is going to be a Gorgazmic brain child. More to come…..

Check this out! Just scored an epic haul from my buddy @cabreezy , and it’s taking me straight back to the 70s, man. This killer custom vans book, along with a rad *Mark of the Devil* vomit bag—yeah, the kind they handed out during screenings, and packs of Bernie Wrightson’s Master of the Macabre cards and Ken Kelly trading cards. Feels like I’m right back in the sweet days of shag carpet, vans with murals of wizards, and rock ‘n’ roll blasting from an 8-track. It’s all the best vibes of being a kid in the 70s, when everything was just a little more groovy and way more raw.
