A visit from Villanova in Dingle!

Donna S. Havens, PhD, RN, FAAN, Connelly Endowed Dean and Professor, spent Fall Break in Ireland visiting our traditional undergraduate BSN students at Sacred Heart University's Dingle campus. The semester abroad brings new experiences in and beyond the classroom, enriching their nursing education and offering fresh perspectives on global health.

The Fitzpatrick College of Nursing proudly celebrates Assistant Professor Evie Lengetti, PhD, RN, NPD-BC, and Associate Professor Carol Weingarten, PhD, RN, ANEF, on their induction as Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing, one of the profession's highest honors. The ceremony took place during the Academy's annual Health Policy Conference, held October 8-10.

Induction into the Academy recognizes nursing leaders whose scholarship, practice and service have made significant and lasting contributions to advancing health care and improving health outcomes. Dr. Lengetti serves as associate dean of the Health Care Professional Development Program, and Dr. Weingarten is inaugural director of WXV&U Health, Villanova University Radio WXVU, 89.1.

We are grateful for their leadership, expertise and commitment to nursing education and the nursing profession, and we join the entire FCN community in celebrating this achievement.

During the Health Policy Conference, Professor Elizabeth Dowdell, PhD, RN, AFN-C, FAAN, contributed her cybersecurity expertise to the panel discussion, “Examining the ethical considerations and health risks associated with the rise of AI for key populations.”

Also inducted this year were alumni Dr. Eileen Condon '08 BSN, Dr. Jacquelyn McMillian-Bohler '17 PhD and Dr. Cynthia Rubenstein '10 PhD. Congratulations to all on this well-deserved recognition.

The M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing has named Linda H. Aiken, PhD, RN, FAAN, FRCN, professor of Nursing and Sociology and founding director of the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research at the University of Pennsylvania, as the 2026 recipient of the M. Louise Fitzpatrick Award for Transformative Leadership.

Dr. Aiken is a globally recognized nurse researcher and sociologist whose scholarship has helped shape nursing and healthcare workforce standards worldwide.

Join us on Thursday, October 22, at the Larson Kelly Auditorium in Driscoll Hall, as we celebrate Dr. Aiken and the lasting impact of her work.

Our Gerontology Interest Group (GIG) held its inaugural Gerontology Speaker Series yesterday with “Not Someone Else’s Problem: Addressing Long-Term Care Challenges Today and Tomorrow.”

We were honored to welcome Jasmine Travers Altizer, PhD, MHS, RN, FAAN, Dean’s Associate Professor Chair for Research Acceleration at NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing, for an important discussion about the challenges facing long-term care and the role of gerontological nursing.

Dr. Travers Altizer was introduced by Associate Professors and GIG Co-Directors Michelle McKay, PhD, RN, CCRN, and Christina Reilly, PhD, AGPCNP-BC, CDCES, FADCES, along with sophomore Linnea Clay.

Yesterday, members of the Gerontology Interest Group and ReachOut had the opportunity to spend the day at New Horizons Senior Center for a day filled with connection, community, and care!

Thank you to New Horizons for welcoming our Villanova Gerontology Interest Group and ReachOut volunteers during the St. Thomas of Villanova Day of Service and for allowing us to learn from and connect with your community.

A huge thank you to all of our amazing volunteers for giving their time, energy, and compassion throughout the day. From health screenings and wellness activities to nail painting, garden-bed building, conversations, and plenty of laughter, you helped make the day so meaningful.
